Includes images of many of the amazing neutrino detectors.
"Because of these and other audacious experiments, the particle that Pauli was sure could never be caught has slowly been revealing its secrets. The recipe for discovery hasn’t changed in seven decades: Think big, go deep, and summon patience."

🔬 The #BigScience Problem – when will the next #paradigmshift happen? ↩️
The biggest questions in #science are far from being answered.
Perhaps, especially in the age of #BigScience, we need #newwaysofthinking again—not just bigger machines.📎https://philosophies.de/index.php/2022/10/26/zoomposium-naumann-bohnet-das-raetselhafte-universum/

How do we make ITER work? ⚡
Fusion energy could reshape the global energy system — but delivering it requires extraordinary physics, engineering, and international collaboration. ITER sits at that intersection of ambition and precision.
The scale of the challenge is matched by the opportunity. 🌍

Although George Orwell was in favor of more skeptical/scientific ways of thinking, he was wary of Big Science because it could be exploited by an authoritarian state.
It's too bad we don't have Orwell around today to comment on Big Tech (though luckily we have @pluralistic ).

ITER didn’t appear overnight 🌍⚡
Its origins lie in decades of research and rare international cooperation.I’ve been exploring how the project began and why it still matters today.

📡 The 𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 is the most sensitive fixed radio telescope in the world! 🌍✨ Unlike the 100m Effelsberg radio telescope, FAST is built into a natural depression.
However, it uses an 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 ⚙️ to adjust its sensitivity and capture signals from different parts of the sky 🌌: The 𝟒,𝟒𝟓𝟎 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬 of its upward-facing dish dynamically deform. FAST can receive signals from an area of about 40° around the zenith. 🔭 Thanks to Earth’s rotation 🌍, it can also observe different celestial objects.
🔎 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙣: Imagine you are lying flat on your back and looking straight up – that’s the zenith (90° above the horizon). If you extend your arm forward and make a fist 🤜 , the width of your fist represents about 10° in the sky. If you stack two fists on top of each other 🤜🤛 or spread the fingers of one hand ✋, you get about 20°.

Acesse o edital e saiba

Just replace "neuroscience" with "biology" and it's still exactly true:

Big science means fewer ideas and less diversity, and in the end: worse science.

🧮 Soil treated with organic fertilizers stores more carbon, study finds
(…not a surprise because many organic fertilizers are carbon rich and don’t send bacteria on a nitrogen-induced rampage but it’s a case of somebody having an X-ray source having a PR function)
