Dick Harrison - De Hanze: Opkomst en ondergang van een machtig handelsverbond (vert. Ger Mesters)

“De Hanze geeft een uitzonderlijk volledig overzicht van het machtige middeleeuwse handelsnetwerk en de wereld waarin het ontstond, floreerde en uiteindelijk ten onder ging.”

Dit haalde me over tot de impulsaankoop van deze pil. Van de Hanze wist ik niet zoveel. Je krijgt wat er staat.

Het is geen uitzonderlijk geslaagd boek. De Hanze heeft eeuwen bestaan, was een los verband, misschien het best te vergelijken met de wereldwijde netwerken die coke smokkelen. Hoe ga je daar ooit de geschiedenis van beschrijven? Er is geen ledenlijst, geen oprichtingsakte etc.

Harrison gaat hier mee om door met een vergrootglas allerlei lijntjes af te lopen. In essentie chronologisch, maar regelmatig ook thematisch. Hierdoor springen de jaartallen, heen en weer in de hoofdstukken en wijst hij in de tekst zowel voor- als achteruit.

Je mist zo het overzicht, de grote lijn die hij wel schets, maar pas in de epiloog. Die had wat mij betreft beter tot zijn recht gekomen als proloog.

Het is in de aanpak een klassiek historisch werk en wat mij betreft wat verouderd qua stijl. Ik werd veel meer gegrepen door “The Tale of the Axe” en “Between Two Rivers“

Uit de boekenkast van mijn vader, deze vuistdikke biografische roman, die heerlijk wegleest en me toch achterliet met een dubbel gevoel.

175 jaar na de dood van de vrijheidsstrijder Tecumseh is het een witte kolonistenzoon die het boek schrijft. Volgens mij heeft hij het integer proberen te doen, vanuit het perspectief van de ‘indianen’, echt onderzoek gedaan en vast met goedkeuring van Shawnee, zoals zijn vrouw.

Maar toch.

These 4 are all books I own physical copies of & that I think I want to read. But, gosh.

They are big.

Like literal door stops, especially 1, 3, & 4.
