  1. Early on, mission 741NT, the qualification flight of the 60 million cubic feet balloon transporting onboard the BOOMS experiment for detecting microburst has been terminated at about 15:55 UTC.

Landing occurred 16:40 UTC southeast of the small community of Taloyoak, in the Boothia Peninsula, Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, Canada.

Total flight time was 3 days and 2 hours.

  2. As of as 16:00 UTC on July 16th, 2024 this is the location of the two balloons in flight of the NASA balloon campaign in ESRANGE.

BIG60 is chasing down SUNRISE III despite the difference of almost three days between launches. That's due to the speed the BIG60 gained flying at 156 kft against the 120 kft average altitude of SUNRISE III.

The Solar telescope mission will be terminated in the next few hours.

  3. As of 4:30 UTC on July 14, 2024 this is the location of the three NASA stratospheric balloons currently in flight.

A recovery team from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility is currently waiting in the city of Yellowknife to fly to the landing spots of the payloads and balloons in the next few days.

  4. Six hours into the flight, the BIG 60 Aerostar balloon carrying the BOOMS payload reached an impressive altitude of 152.000 ft (46.3 kilometers). As the Swedish Space Corp. press release correctly points out, this is the largest balloon ever launched from Europe.

Earlier on, the ascending balloon was visible from as far as Vannøya Island in Norway (using a telescope).

  5. BOOMS/BIG60 balloon mission successfully launched from ESRANGE balloon base at 14:39 UTC.

  6. The payload carried by the BIG60 balloon as a mission of opportunity is the Ballon Observation of Microburst Studies or BOOMS, an instrument developed at the Department of Physics of the Montana State University.

Main goal of BOOMS is to observe flashes of X-ray light that sporadically appear in the atmosphere of Earth's poles, known as microbursts, which occur when high-energy electrons collide with atmospheric gases.

  7. Now underway at ESRANGE are the launch operations for the fourth and last balloon flight of the NASA campaign.

The unusually large flight train is due to the enormous size of the balloon.

The so-called "Big 60" has a volume of 60 million cubic feet and is capable of reaching altitudes well beyond 150.000 feet. The balloon is in the process of qualification to be part of NASA's inventory.

  8. As I mentioned, the #BIG60 #balloon launched yesterday from #McMurdo with AESOP-Lite onboard as the closing flight of the #NASA launch campaign in #Antarctica continues to lose altitude steadily.

Since it reached a float altitude of 156.000 ft the 60 million cubic feet balloon is now flying at 126.000 ft. This is a clear indication of a possible leak and is a situation well beyond any probable recovery, even dumping all ballast available.

At this peace of descent, the flight will end soon.
