  1. @ascentale @bikenite A1. Posting from home, Santa Clara, CA doing some needed #BicycleRepair ; replacing a rear tube, I found that my cassette needs replacing! I've never seen the external plating rubbed off like that before (but now I need a Bafang-specific tool to remove it; $35-50 sigh) #BikeNite

  2. Well, crud. I'm trying to get a 1980s mountain bike back on the road, but one of the brake pads is missing the rubber, and apparently smooth-post pads for center-pull brakes are no longer a thing. Anyone have suggestions or resources? (Not doing a restoration, just hoping my wife and I might bicycle to the Mexican restaurant a mile away on some pleasant evening.) #bicyclerepair c @ai6yr

  3. I broke a spoke on the rear wheel of my old racing bike a few days ago. Just fixed it. First had to remember how to remove an old Shimano 5 speed cassette. The smallest sprocket is the lock ring with these. The other sprockets could be replaced with parts of newer cassettes if I took the time to file down their larger splines (they're all the same on this older system). However nothing looks very worn so I'll continue with the 13/14/15/16/17 gears for now and hope that the Netherlands doesn't suddenly sprout hills.

  5. The dream? A community workshop for bike maintenance and parts.

Maren's small initiative is already showing how diverse people can unite through cycling.

What a wonderful vision for the future! 🛠️ #BicycleRepair #CommunityBuilding

  6. Backup bike saddle had a bad habit of just suddenly coming loose whenever I *didn't * have a multi-tool on me. I thought it was finally fixed by last LBS in Lanesboro visit. Houston LBS showed me the problem was basically like a stripped screw. Which was why it sometimes worked--and sometimes didn't.

He replaced it and saddke, and new saddle has 2 bolts instead of just one, so that has made things much better.

  7. Sometimes you just have to admit that having to fix the front shifting over and over might mean a part needs replacement. Felt so much better when my LBS owner/mechanic came to that conclusion for my touring bike. I'd gone much farther than I should have adjusting it.

  12. First of all: I am not a fan of promoting companies or products. We already have enough advertisements around us.
But also: In a world where most bigger companies don't give a shit about customers it's worth pointing out the positive exceptions.

Yesterday on my way to work I figured that something is wrong with the newly overhauled drivetrain on my #bicycle. It made a lot of noise and the shifting was not smooth at all. At first I thought it was a adjustment problem but upon closer inspection I realized that the pulley wheels on the rear derailleur and the chain do not work well together. It seemed to me like my replacements were not compatible

Somewhat hesitant (after my unpleasant encounter with the rather ignorant and arrogant #Shimano support last year) I decided to ask #SRAM rider support for help and described the problem to them.

Here is how they responded in less than 24h:

    Hello Frank,

Thanks for contacting SRAM Rider Support.

At first glance, I cannot identify any clear incompatibility. The GX 2x10 derailleur you purchased uses the same Exact Actuation pull ratio as the X9 shifter/derailleur, so there shouldn't be any issues there. The chain and cassette are appropriate as well. To ensure I'm understanding correctly, this was a complete overhaul with the cassette, RD, chain, and chainring all in new condition. Is that accurate? Which size of PG-1030 cassette are you using? Is the cassette size different than the original?

Could you send a video of the chain interacting with the pulley wheels? Rotating the cranks at a slow pace so that I can analyze the interaction clearly would be optimal.

    Thanks in advance,

One can see straight away that this person has read and understood the request and is invested into helping to figure out the problem. From my experience with customer support this is rather rare.

Only by reading their response I figured out what was wrong. I had replaced all parts apart from the chain that was not older than 4 months (Yeah I know that everything SHOULD be replaced at the same time but I did not think that it would not work with a chain that is only 4 months old and that has not been used extensively).

So I replaced the chain and voila - the problem is gone.

  13. Giving my #bike a complete (and most likely the first in it's 10 years of existence) overhaul/upgrade.
Casualties so far: only a seized seat post, pretty much all of the suspension bearings and the crank bearings.
    Not bad at all...
Yet I do have to open, inspect and rebuild the damper fork and rear shock so fingers crossed that there will be no bad surprises.
For upgrades I've got some cheap second hand double piston brakes, a ultracheap second hand carbon riser handlebar, new gearwire cables and a new rear derailleur.

  14. Today’s chaos magic: zip tie stabilising my rear mudguard gave up up on the way in this morning. Just as I was wondering where I might source one at work I saw one on the floor on the way back from the showers. Perfect length and sorted the problem - just happened to be looking down at the right moment. #serendipity #synchronicity #ChaosMagic #cycling #BikeTooter #BicycleRepair

  16. Finished my Eddy Merckx Strada OS neo-retro road bike rebuilt. Got a modern carbon fork in and switch to Shimano 105 parts. The frame was in good condition but I treated it with Boeshield T-9 anyway. With the new drive train came new wheels as well. Might swap out the original commuter saddle for something more aggressive, and drop the stem a bit as well. Fun learning curve getting this all sorted, resulting in a faster bike as well.

  17. … and we're all sorted with an aluminium replacement. Pretty straightforward to fit, although a tad fiddly, as anything involving springs seems to be. #cycling #BicycleRepair

  18. @parktool
I DID IT! All by myself! Thanks to the invaluable Calvin Jones, the Big Blue Book and lots of patience, all front wheel spokes are now tensioned within 20% tolerance again. Also: now I get why you 'd want an app for that. I'm generally not a big app fan, but this one:💙

  24. There's a reason a 50 CAD bike repair stand only costs 50 CAD. It completely fell apart after only a few months of infrequent use with my rather light weight #foldingbike. Princess Auto say they aren't selling this model any more and I should be able to get a full refund if I haul it out to them. #bicyclerepair #yougetwhatyoupayfor

  25. My friend was complaining that his 6 month old #Trek Bike was making crunchy sounds when riding. So I pulled it apart to see what was wrong. Turns out the rear wheel bearing cone on the chain side of his #Bontrager wheel was completely stuffed. It was making the crunchy noises from the day he bought it. The same wheel has also had 5 spokes snap in ordinary city riding. (The guy that owns this bike does not treat it badly, he uses it as his primary in-city transport.)
I put new cones, bearings and spokes in it, and it's fixed.

I believe the cone was faulty from the factory, as only one cone on side of the hub was damaged.

He didn't take it back under warranty because High Street Cycles in Shepparton closed down the day after he purchased it. And the nearest Trek warranty repairer is over 150KM away in Albury.

the rest of the Trek bike has been perfectly good, the disc brakes are a little loud, but other than that good. the only issues he's had with it have all been issues with the Bontrager wheels.

I wouldn't recommend Bontrager wheels after this.
