For several years, my workplace had no bicycle parking rack. For about 4 years my bicycle, this one in the picture, was the only one using it. The year following those it sometimes started to be difficult to find a bicycle parking place in it because the rack was full. Then it had some abandoned bicycles in the summer semester.

I like that they repurposed this to be a regular bicycle parking rack, but really wish it was still a bike share dock. Bike share is transformative for people's perceptions about how useful bicycles can be.

So, when staying at a hotel in a suburb of a large city, and driving out 30 miles and back to your hotel, make sure you put in the actual address instead of relying on GPS.

The parking lot looked a little different, but all the buildings seemed the same. Because so _many_ of the buildings in this area have the same design.

It took me noticing that there were *good* bicycle parking racks instead of *none* to realize we were at the wrong location of the same brand hotel.

In August we gave a short in-person presentation on “ABC Quick Check.” In the process we showed attendees our portable pump and the pump we use at home, a Park floor pump. When we commented that you don’t always have to have an ample budget to get quality tools—that we’d bought our Park pump used at a Goodwill store—some asked which Goodwill. It was this one, on West Broadway in the Monterey County city of Seaside. While biking last Sunday, when we paused out front of that store, there was another person who bikes apparently scouting their inventory. :)

This photo here is exactly why you should not secure bicycle parking hoops to the ground with bolts.

It's incredibly easy for anyone with an adjustable wrench to loosen the base, lift the hoop and steal your bike. The thickness or strength of your lock doesn't matter (but you can get locks that will help a lot in this situation like the Kryptonite NY/NY Fahgettaboudit).

At work we avoid building these wherever we can. Instead we install in-ground hoops that are concreted or asphalted into the ground directly. This is a much more secure design.

Great way to start the #NewYear: being approached with #BikeAdvocacy questions on the courtyard after #church last Sunday (at #solar-powered First Presbyterian Church of #Monterey—which has #BicycleParking by the sanctuary's front door).

The church member who approached us (not the man in the photo, though at same spot) is a #Carmel resident with many specific ideas for #infrastructure improvements near Carmel High #School (which one of his #children attends) and elsewhere.

Got a lunch get-together at a restaurant about 7km away. A place I don't visit much.

As usual, I considered* riding my #bike. But it's soooooo hot. 🥵 And there's my usual concern about bike security.

A lot has changed since I last visited. They didn't have #bicycleParking before.

Looking at the crowded #bikeRack, I'm actually glad my bike isn't there roasting in the sun and scratching up against those other #bikes. 😶

So I did my Sunday morning exercise ride, but I scrapped the idea of riding my #bike to a get-together at a restaurant inside a mall that I rarely go to.

I didn't know what their #bicycleParking was like. And I'm still* chicken about leaving my bike where I can't see it. But mainly because I hadn't had any sleep yet. 😑

Well, it's a good thing I didn't. Look at that #BikeRack! 😳

It's #breakfast time and I got the best seat in the house! 😉 I think I'll make this my weekly Sunday reward... Till I find another place where I'm comfortable parking my bike and dining indoors.

I've stopped running Strava on my phone when I #bike. I just use my #Garmin ⌚ and sync to #Strava later. I still run the #BikeCitizens app for some extra data.
