  2. @ink I like it. It might trigger some people to explore JSON-LD/Linked Open Usable Data with regard to #Bibframe where LOUD does not have much traction yet. Also, you can follow up nicely on @julsraemy's Tuesday talk "Linked Open Usable Data for Cultural Heritage: Community Building and Semantic Interoperability in Practice": forum.swib.org/t/linked-open-u #swib25

  6. @edsu At #elag2019, we already did hands-on bootcamp on creating #LOUD from the #Bibframe works dataset, indexing it and using it e.g. with #Openrefine. Slides: hbz.github.io/elag2019-bootcam repo: github.com/hbz/elag2019-bootca I haven't heard of any new Bibframe work bulk download since, though. @thatandromeda @hochstenbach

  7. BIBFRAME Must Die
    by Jeff Edmunds

👉 October 15, 2023 marks the 21st anniversary of Roy Tennant's article "MARC Must Die." With a nod to #MARC21, this article argues that #BIBFRAME is not the way forward for bibliographic description and offers five reasons why.

  9. When I was trying to debug the #LibraryOfCongress #BIBFRAME editor, MARVA, I discovered these gems in the commit log.

    We are all doomed.

  10. Problems with #BIBFRAME continued:

    - It depends on a massive amount of library infrastructure and workflows that don't exist yet.

    - If it ever does happen, it will rely on search engines to make catalogues discoverable in search results, which means that libraries are allowing big companies like Google to know what books you're checking out. This is a huge breach of librarians' professional ethics. (See Shayna Pekala, "Privacy and User Experience in 21st Century Library Discovery", 2017).

  11. Gonna nerd out on library stuff here — you've been warned.

My hot take on #BIBFRAME is that it's never happening. It's been in the pipes for over ten years now, and they've done some amazing things in that time.

    But:
    - The cataloguing software doesn't support it.
    - There are no editors (I spent all day trying to run the one made by #LibraryOfCongress and it won't go. Their readme is useless.)

  12. Dropping in on the Marva #BIBFRAME demo at #LD4_2023 . Enjoying the presenter walk-through; also getting a bit concerned that BIBFRAME seems still too tightly coupled to RDF than is probably good for general cataloging. (For instance, it looks from the example that author ordering has no built-in support, like it has in VIVO or Wikidata, and as a result the way creators and contributors are recorded for works seems to be clunkier than it should be)

  13. Will someone let me know when it's time for me to understand #BIBFRAME?

  15. Just found this blog post "Beef with Bibframe" and 5.5 years on, this is still disappointingly true:
    > "The philosophy at the beginning of BIBFRAME was quite literally “Let’s figure out how to describe digital representations of books” and not “let’s figure out how to describe digital resources that libraries own”. #bibframe

  16. Impression from #swib22 so far: #BIBFRAME is actually becoming reality, migration from #MARC21 or other formats has finally begun. The end goal, however is still moving, as bibframe does not cover all requirements

  17. In her great #swib22 talk on #bibframe modeling Tina Tina Trillitzsch (Leibniz-Institut für Psychologie #ZPID) mentioned they also use #Skosmos for their vocabularies. The instance is not publicly accessible (yet?). See bartoc.org/registries for public Skosmos instances and let us know if there are more!

  18. Kick-off for the last day of #swib21 is in an hour (14:00 UTC) with the "Data models" session. #Bibframe #RDA #CidocCRM

Watch the live stream at streaming.collocall.de/swib21/ and join the discussion in the Town Square channel at swib21.collochat.de/swib21/cha.

  19. We are thinking about how to best distinguish in RDF "electronic items" derived from #Alma portfolios from physical items: github.com/hbz/lobid-resources

#Bibframe does not seem to support this, sdo:DigitalDocument currently seems to be the best candidate. Are we missing something? #datamodelling #libraries #rdf
