  1. Failed attempt to write a song about depression from 10 years ago. Story without an ending. Sometimes that happens, kids.
Roughed-in, trivial, cringey half-assed chorus, bridge with harmonies but no words yet, guitar solo, then nothing.
I hated the title...Fuck the Sad? Like fuck sad people? No. Or like "fuck the pain away"? Not really. So I sang "fuck this sadness" instead but then depression isn't just "sadness" so the whole thing just stalled and I didn't want to go back to it.

  3. There’s sure a lot of #LastDayOfSchool vibes in the air!
Back in 2008 on the last day I waited outside my kids school with my old video camera for the bell to ring and the kids to come out screaming. I used the sounds in a poppy little song about the liberating feeling of leaving something shitty behind, at least for a while, and starting something new. Featuring a Moog bass and Moog harmonica-ish solo, and my now adult kids shoutin' “school is out!” and screaming.

  5. Here’s a corny version of the old Wonder Woman TV show theme that I did in 2013 on our old piano, just before we gave it away so we could have a kitchen large enough to open the fridge door all the way. Featuring goofy ‘40s singing, banjitar, snare ’n’ hihat.

  9. Ring My Tubular Bell

Done back in 2012, it’s a VERY silly cover I made of Anita Ward’s “Ring My Bell” done over the famous piano riff from Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells.”

  11. Back on my bullshit.
Here’s me in 2013 trying to write a one minute pop song called “Everything You Threw Away” about our nasty mayor at the time, who was driving around loaded at night smoking crack and drinking vodka in parking lots while the cops and press followed him, rifling through garbage cans. Truly a proud time for Toronto.
    Okay song, terrible headphone mix.

  13. My 2015 cover of Johnny Mercer’s “Christmas Glow Worm.” The Mills Brothers had a hit in the 50's with Mercer's lyrics to an old German tune. In '63, Mercer wrote new Xmas lyrics for Bing Crosby. Except Crosby neutered Mercer's lyrics. Mel Tormé butchered it in the 90's and it seems everyone took his lyrics as legit forever after. I went to the Toronto Reference Library and found the original Mercer Xmas lyrics which are bizarre and of the time but kind of great.

  15. Crusty old demo I did around the turn of the century; 2 guitars and a shaker. Probably done to “show the guys” in the band at the time, I’d do that a lot; I had to learn it myself by recording it before I taught it to them. Back then someone tried to mock me for the line “treat me like a piece of clay” but that’s Hank Williams, baby.
Anyway, sometimes you just don’t care.

  17. This song from 2011 was done for a SongFight! in which the title prompt was “Boron Rod.” I had to look up what a Boron Rod was and then, using that criteria, jeez it’s pretty challenging to come up with something that isn’t incredibly goofy. So I did a sort of tongue-in-cheek acoustic guitar ballady thing with some metaphors and silly lyrics sung with a straight face.
    Anyhow, I won the SongFight.

  19. A very spare cover of the song “Frank Mills” from the original Broadway soundtrack of Hair. This song got stuck in my head after we walked by the (former) Waverly Theater in Greenwich Village one week in April 2013 and I had to exorcise it with some sloppy, mistake-filled guitar-playing when we got home.

  21. RE: musicians.today/@bgm/115618558

Hey there music lovers. I don’t have anything new for sale on this #BandcampFriday but recently after cleaning out decades of crap and ephemera from our basement I decided to do the same thing digitally and post a whole bunch of old recordings that I’d never otherwise do anything with. Follow along with the tag #bgmArchives if you’re so obliged; but be warned, things are gonna get weird. Otherwise please feel free to buy stuff from my Bandcamp, link in profile. 10% discount code is “fudge” ❤️

  23. Here’s one called “Better Soon,” from the depths of the long cold winter of February 2009.
I guess it’s sort of a song about seasonal depression, but fun! and poppy!
Features several of my go-to’s (crutches?): double tracking, farty synth bass, glockenspiel and bg harmony aaaahs.
    🤷
Really slammed the levels on this one for some reason.

  25. 2004: I stayed up way too late recording this song the night before my daughter's 5th birthday. When her friends came over for the party, we had them all sing the chorus and then each of them got to sing the lead part solo. We feverishly burned a bunch of discs and each kid got a CD of their solo in their loot bag. Neighbourhood moms came up to me singing this…flattering, until I noticed the look on their faces which said that they’d heard it over and over…

  27. My 2012 version of O Holy Night done on a banjitar. Despite my lack of religion and the fact that this song has been done to death, I always liked it and I wanted to give it a shot at the time.

  29. Going through the archives: one-offs, oddities, covers and jokes. Why not.

Here’s a song from 2007, recorded on my old G4 PowerBook in Garageband, using that tiny little pinhole laptop mic. We had spent weeks cleaning and repairing our house, trying to sell it, and everything was packed away and I had no recording stuff. It’s bad memories actually but this song is kind of funny to me in a dopey way.
