Suzanne Vega, Flying With Angels, 2025 on Cooking Vinyl
Vega's tenth studio album and her first of new material since 2014. Bob Dylan gets cowriting credit on "Chambermaid" as a kind of alternate version of "I Want You." "Speaker's Corner" is a great song as well: I have a newfound sympathy For the madman in the square Who rants and raves his rhetoric Into the midday air My version—direct from the artist at a live show at the Cabot Theater in Beverly MA—is a signed copy on grey smoke vinyl.https://goatless.org/2026/04/24/suzanne-vega-flying-with-angels-2025-on-cooking-vinyl

Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Imperial Bedroom, 1982 on Columbia
Seventh studio LP from Costello and the sixth with The Attractions, out of F-Beat in the UK and Columbia in the US. A must have for collectors of Costello or indeed the whole new wave / alternative era of the late seventies to mid eighties.
My copy – direct from the artist at a show at the Cabot Theatre in Beverly MA with Steve Nieve — is a recent reissue by UMe, who now handle Costello’s catalog.

The Robert Cray Band, That’s What I Heard, 2020 on Nozzle Records
Robert Cray (often attributed as The Robert Cray Band) has been making great electric blues albums since 1980’s Who’s Been Talkin’. This is their most recent studio album and won the Soul Blues Award at the Blues Music Awards from the Blues Foundation in 2021.
I’m a huge fan of Cray’s approach to the blues and it’s great to hear what good shape his voice and his playing are in.
I picked up my copy (on clear vinyl) at a 2024 show at the Cabot Theater in Beverly MA.

Suzanne Vega at The Cabot, June 5th, 2025
Suzanne Vega and Gerry Leonard onstage at The CabotSuzanne Vega is on 13-night tour of the east coast (Maine to DC), and one of the stops was in Beverly at the Cabot.
The show is Vega, accompanied by Gerry Leonard, with cellist Stephanie Winters joining on maybe 2/3rds of the songs. There are some backing tracks (percussion) on some songs and I think Leonard may be doubling some bass strings (an effect that covers for the lack of a bass player).
She did a ton of older material – back to “The Queen and the Soldier” and “Small Blue Thing” as well as hits like “Merlene on the Wall” and “Left of Center” – including of course, Luka.
Luka: Suzanne Vega at The CabotThey also did some material from the new album, Flying with Angels, including her adaptation of Bob Dylan’s “I Want You” rewritten from the pov of the chambermaid, and the title track. The audience kept calling for “Witches” – perhaps inspired by proximity to Salem – but Vega said they weren’t ready for that.
As an encore, the trio covered Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and did “Love Thief” from the new album, closing with “Blood Makes Noise” of her 99.9 F° album.

Brandy Clark, Brandy Clark, 2023 on Slate Creek / Warner
Clark’s fourth studio album, self-titled, and produced by Brandi Carlile, who provides backing vocals, piano and guitar on a number of tracks and is featured on “Dear Insecurity,” which they performed live at the Grammys in 2024 – and for which she won a “Best Americana Performance” Grammy.
She’s been a great songwriter for many years but I think this is her best album yet. Love the heartbreaking lyrics of “Buried”:
I’ll meet somebody else
Probably get married
I’ll keep it to myself
But I’ll love you ’til I’m buried
My copy from the merch table at a show at the Cabot in April 2024.

Brandy Clark, Your Life is a Record, 2020 on Warner Records / Slate Creek
Clark’s third studio LP, produced by Jay Joyce. Includes “Bigger Boat” (a duet with Randy Newman) and “Who You Thought I Was.” I think Clark is a fantastic modern songwriter rooted in classic country storytelling and worldplay. This is a bit more aimed at mainstream pop audiences, but I think it’s very successful.
We’re either all the way left or all the way right
The only time we meet in the middle is to fight
The rich get richer, the rest get a little more broke
We’re gonna need a bigger boatMy copy, signed, direct from the merch table at a show at the Cabot in Beverly MA, April 30, 2024

Sweden’s José González at the Cabot Theater in Beverly MA.Quick post to share a photo and some videos from seeing José González at the Cabot. He plays with no opening act and no intermission – just him on stage with two guitars (different tunings?) – I’m not sure he even had a bottle of water.
Teardrop – José González at the Cabot Theater in Beverly MAReally ended up just watching the performance and not getting much video.
Killing For Love – José González at the Cabot Theater in Beverly MAHe did have a great merch table with vinyl – I’ve found it hard to find him elsewhere.

Elvis Costello & Steve Nieve, March 1st 2025 at the Cabot
Last time Elvis Costello came through Beverly and did a show at the Cabot I didn’t manage to get tickets. This time, as a member, I was able to score a great seat in front row balcony.
The Costello & Nieve 2025 tour announced 15 nights in February and March:
I can’t vet all the venues, but I’m guessing the Cabot in Beverly is one of the smaller, at ~850 seats. If you can get one of the first row balcony seats it is one of the best venues on the North Shore.
The stage set includes a number of mics – lots of places where Costello can sit or stand and use various kinds of microphones, guitars, and keyboards appropriate to the mood. Nieve mostly stayed beyond the keys there in the back left, between piano and keyboard options.
They played a wide variety of songs from across Costello’s career. He was in great form, joking about getting a capo from Timothy Chalamet who he felt could play him in a biopic after “a couple of years and a couple of cases of gin.”
(Full Setlist and review from Boston.com)
The lighting played a bit of havoc with my phone camera – this was “Black Sails in the Sunset”
I did not get many recordings – was just enjoying the show – but grabbed a few snippets.
“Brilliant Mistake” early in the set – “He thought he was the King of America /
Where they pour Coca Cola just like vintage wine”There was a fair amount of reflection on America and the current political climate – consistent with what Costello called the “Angry Young Man” rep he’s been saddled with.
An almost meditative “Veronica” – with Nieve at the piano and Costello on the stool down-stage right where he played a number of quieter / more reflective songs.
For “Allison” Costello moved to the Fender Rhodes stage left – you can hear Nieve’s piano as well.
Finale of “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love and Understanding” on which Costello and Nieve traded singing duties – perhaps the expected closer but I was all about it.

T. Rex, T. Rextasy: The Best of T. Rex, 1970-1973, 1985 on Warner Bros.
Mid-eighties compilation of T. Rex. Between 1970 and 1973, the band had eleven top 10 singles in the UK – including many here. Produced by Tony Visconti.
I came to T. Rex indirectly through The Replacements (who covered “20th Century Boy” on Let it Be), Bauhaus (who covered “Telegram Sam”) and The Power Station (who covered “Bang a Gong”) as well as all the Bowie intersections and references.
My copy, via Beverly Coin & Jewel in Beverly MA, included an ad for Marc Bolan on Video – available in VHS or Beta from Passport Music / JEM (see image below).

The Replacements, Don’t Tell a Soul, 1989 on Sire / Reprise
This was the Replacements first album with Slim Dunlop replacing Bob Stinson on guitar. It was recorded in LA, produced by Matt Wallace and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge, purportedly in an attempt to be more radio friendly, though Westerberg said he preferred the rougher approach of other ‘mats albums.
I think it’s a wonderful album – maybe a bit more “refined” than some of the noisier stuff, but Paul Westerberg’s songwriting is top notch here: “I’ll Be You,” “Talent Show,” and “Achin’ to Be” are among my favorites.

Wham!, Make it Big, 1984 on Columbia
This was the second studio album from the duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley – the first, Fantastic!, didn’t make much of an impression in the US, but this album was unavoidable in the mid-80s.
“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” seemed to come on MTV every hour for a year. “Careless Whisper” maybe every two hours, but still pretty much something you could not get away from.

“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” seemed to come on MTV every hour for a year. “Careless Whisper” maybe every two hours, but still pretty much something you could not get away from.

Willie Dixon, Mighty Earthquake And Hurricane, 1984 on PA USA
Though one doesn’t normally think of Dixon as an eighties artist (he started putting out recordings in the late 50s) he was still making great music into the 80s before passing in 1992. He also toured behind his album well into his 60s.
The band here includes Freddie Dixon (bass), Jimmy Tillman (drums), John Watkins and Johnny B. Moore (guitar), Billy Branch (harmonica), and Lafayette Leake (piano) – what Dixon called The Chicago Blues Allstars. Recorded in Chicago at Universal Studios by Stu Walder, with Dixon producing.
PA USA, with it’s American flag logo, was actually owned by an Italian company “Produttori Associati” (Manufacturer’s Association), but put out some great jazz and blues in the 70s and 80s – but later lost a multi-million dollar lawsuit for failure to pay royalties.

Great collection of songs produced by Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare, whose production company and label were both called Taxi, released on Mango which was an Island Records subsidiary focused on Caribbean artists.

Sinéad O’Connor, The Lion and the Cobra, 1987 on Chrysalis / Ensign
This was Sinéad’s debut album and is still just astonishingly great. The spoken word intro in gaelic by Enya before “Never Get Old” is Psalm 91:
For He will give His angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee upon their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and asp; The young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample […]
