  16. I recently spoke to the Canberra Times about Living Streets Canberra's disappointment regarding the delayed introduction of fees for footpath closures. The government delayed the fees after being lobbied by the ACT Property Council.

  23. My problem with this is if it would actually get used. What I know from pedestrian activity is, pedestrians will find the easiest, quickest and most convenient way to walk. I would expect this to be especially true of teenagers.

So if we built a pedestrian bridge, would it get used, or would students just dash across the road because it was more convenient for them.

  25. Andrew Barr's office advised me a week ago that Tara Cheyne's office is looking into the situation at Botanical Turner. I haven't heard anything yet, so I have sent a follow up email to her office this morning.

The issue is ongoing at the site.

  26. It is no wonder why there is such distrust with Fix My Street in Canberra.

I had raised a safety concern regarding the bollards on City Walk at Garema Place, as construction workers have been leaving the bollards out with no cover, leaving a big hole in the ground.

On Wednesday, TCCS closed my report noting "Bollard Cover replaced". But today I visited the area. Again, the bollard is out, and there is still no cover for the hole.

  28. Today I am an example of why it is important that attention is brought to our walking environments. I'm at TCH tonight, waiting for xray of my left arm. Happened at work. Two paths not quite meeting level.

  35. I wrote up a blog post on my cycleway lengths dashboard: jakecoppinger.com/2024/01/whic

  37. Paris to charge SUV drivers higher parking fees to tackle ‘auto-besity’

    > Paris city hall is to impose higher parking fees on owners of SUVs in its battle to reduce pollution in the capital.

    > Details of the charges have not been announced but the size, weight of the vehicle and its motor will be taken into consideration.

  38. @walk_sydney I've added all the crossings with countdown timers in Sydney (collected via Better Intersections via ODbL) to OpenStreetMap under the `traffic_signals:countdown_green=yes` tag, which you can see a map of here: overpass-turbo.eu/s/1wAj

The wiki for the `traffic_signals:countdown` tag in OSM is for timers counting down the red until the green light - so I invented that tag name - open to suggestions from the worldwide OSM community on better tag names for that.

A (very empty) map of scramble crossings is at overpass-turbo.eu/s/1wAk, using the `crossing:scramble=yes`.

Please add any other examples you know of either to OSM, or let me know and I can add them.

  39. City of Sydney: Sydney Square’s $35m upgrade paves the way for a transforming city

    > New paving, seating and lighting will revitalise the tired square between Sydney Town Hall and St Andrew’s Cathedral, as the transformation of public space across the city centre continues.

    > The City of Sydney will begin work on the $35 million upgrade of Sydney Square and its surrounding public areas in 2027.
