  1. Oh my, the @EUCommission really argues the #deregulation #Omnibus doesn't need an Impact Assessment (which the EU's own #BetterRegulation guidelines normally require), because they had "evidence" from internal Staff Documents, so documents the Commission has written itself. Oh and they had targeted (read: closed-door) conversations with industry.

This is not how independent evidence collection and analysis works!

  2. On Tuesday 28 April, the European Commission issued its 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗿, 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗨 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸, proposing several solutions to the ever-expanding complexification of EU law. It follows a long history of attempts to simplify EU law, as I explain in a paper that is due to appear in the Review of European Administrative Law: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf. 1/2

  3. The Commission @ec.europa.eu published its new #BetterRegulation Guidelines. With @NABU I contributed to the call for evidence. 4. BAM: EU Commission did maladministration against it owns rules with the #CAP simplification and #CSRD Omnibus, as it did not respect #BetterRegulation (consultations, impact assessments). This is what the official EU Watchdog (EU Ombudsman) found. I hope this puts limits to the warfare on the environmental acquis! ombudsman.europa.eu/en/press-r

  5. #BetterRegulation: How to ensure EU #tech rules also work in practice? 🛠️

@MathildeAdjutor on importance of #implementation: "This is when #regulators and companies test the practicality of new rules, and #citizens ought to reap the benefits."

  6. #BetterRegulation: "The Commission must swiftly and decisively use its #EU treaty powers to hold Member States accountable for actions that weaken the #SingleMarket, such as gold-plating #digital laws or #discriminatory requirements," Alexandre Roure argues.

  7. Both 2024-29 #PoliticalGuidelines & #Draghi will likely lead to a stronger role for #BetterRegulation + RSB, considering plans for:

↪️ a “new SME and competitiveness check”

↪️ a Commission Vice President for Simplification

  8. This is a really welcome ruling by EU Ombudsman which should help to counter #privilegedaccess and logically lead to far more transparency from the Commission when it comes to so-called #BetterRegulation scrutiny of its legislative proposals.

  9. 👉 We should know Commission’s thinking & how unaccountable RSB could be influencing it.

    We need:
➡️ Robust & ambitious REACH proposal published now
➡️ Full transparency of #BetterRegulation process now, followed by major overhaul of deregulatory thinking behind it
➡️ Lobby firewall to protect decision-making from #Toxics industry

  13. Voluntary regulation doesn’t work, but the UK Government keeps pushing it:

“More than 90% of hand carwashes are likely to be employing workers illegally, without proper pay, records and first aid measures, three years after the government backed a voluntary scheme to tackle abuse in the sector.”
