#Iwatched the #RobbieWilliams bio-film #BetterMan (2024). I was never a fan of Williams or Take That, but I did like some of his solo material. And I thought that the cocksure coolness he displayed in music videos like The Road to Mandalay would translate well to film. Well, maybe with a story that isn't about himself, switching back and forth between self pity and aggrandising. It's just too much Robbie Williams and it turns out he and his problems aren't original or interesting.

Las biografías audiovisuales se diferencian, al menos últimamente, de las escritas en que defraudan más. No obstante, los biopics suelen cumplir con todos los mínimos y hasta resultar entretenidos para quienes los ven, quienes opten por no hacerlo poco se pierden.
Son predecibles.
Además, uno de los males raíces de estas producciones es contar con la aprobación o, en el peor de los casos, con el asesoramiento, de la biografiada. Me repito: las mejores biografías son las no oficiales.
Aparte de esto, o justo por eso, se agradece una vuelta de tuerca general, o, al menos, si no en el fondo en la estructura narrativa y en el uso de los recursos que brinda el medio. Quitarse miedos y probar.
El acierto más lucido de Better Man es cegeizar al prota para darle un punto más mono todavía. Sin miseria, que pagan otres. Que Robbie Williams sea un monete, que los furros vean la peli, por si acaso.
La estrella del pop está gozando de su legado, previamente, un documental, en ropa interior, en primera persona, recogía y comentaba su vida y obra. Ahora sigue su peli.
Better Man se mete más en la vida que en la obra, pero las entrecruza con esmero. Robbie quiere subrayar su faceta de showman junto a la de letrista. La victoria es pírrica ya que va perdiendo caudal, fuerza, por el trayecto narrativo.
Y es que el hombre le roba muchas escenas al artista. Faltan, por ejemplo, y sin ir más lejos, canciones. ¡Canciones en la bio de un cantante!, ¡de una estrella del pop! Suenan muy pocas, entre lo crooner y lo pop.
She is Madonna, Difficult For Weirdos, You know me, Radio, Rudebox, Sin sin sin, Bodies, Tripping... y sus entresijos se han quedado fuera. No way, tío! Y falta Geri y... y...
Queda una historia bien llevada, que se beneficia de las omisiones y del tono entre sentimental y travieso, el que corresponde al personaje, a la persona. Por eso Better Man es buena.

Anoche ví #BetterMan y qué buena película. Me sorprendió descubrir que conozco muchas canciones de él al escucharlas de niño, y eso que no salen las canciones que sé que conozco.
Unos efectos especiales se ven muy locos (la escena del carro en el lago, cuando llega el helicoptero, etc.) y el sonido en el cine está 👌
Varias veces se me salieron lagrimas. Qué buena está.

I have no real interest in seeing the Robbie Williams #betterman film but do admire the film makers taking an expensive risk on something strange.

Calidad/tiempo: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️No ha cambiado mi opinión sobre Robbie Williams, ni para bien ni para mal, pero me parece un acierto no sólo el tono, el despliegue de imaginativas metáforas y la energía suprema que transmite el film, sino también el hecho decidirse a contar la historia propia. Este es quien soy. Estos son mis errores. Estos mis aciertos. En este punto hago un alto y hablo al mundo sobre cuál ha sido mi vida y mis decisiones, y qué quiero en el futuro.
Una película que no me ha abandonado estos días desde que la vi. Los biopic me gustan, pero hablar en primera persona, cuando se puede, es un acierto mayor.
Como decía el gran Gabo “Vivir para contarla”. Quizá algún día yo también lo haga.
