You'll get some idea of which songs stood out for me in 2023 by searching for #KpopOfTheWeek and looking at my December 19 Kpop #SongOfTheYear2023 post.
For this #KpopMonday I have chosen one song WJSN performed at lsat January's Fan Con -- Codename :Ujung
As well as liking the tropical house sound of Tra-La, I now look back at this stage with a mixture of pleasure and melancholy, a melange of emotions underlined by the wistfulness of the song itself.
For those who don't follow WJSN, two members, Dawon and Luda, did not renew their contracts with Starship Entertainment. The agency has stated they are staying in the group , but WJSN's future looks uncertain. Will we ever see stages like this again?
As with so much pop music, there is a bittersweetness to the song, that carries over into my larger reflections. What will become of WJSN? What happens to idols as they age? What becomes of the love so celebrated here and in so many other pop songs?

Can't believe I didn't post this sooner, but my absolute number one pick for #BestKpopOf2023 is definitely one I haven't shut up about all year. I've definitely posted this song for #KpopMonday before. It's Shownu X Hyungwon with Love Me A Little! I love everything about this song. The melody, the vocals, the dancing, Hyungwon's excellent production skills, EVERYTHING! Two of the best dancers in Kpop coming together to form a subunit is perfection!
