Thursday.
Poor #Bertie has had an infection lately. He's really struggling to keep food down and with a very sore bottom.
still, before the nappy comes off he does enjoy throwing the packet of wipes off his changing mat...
Content warning for cute baby noises. -
For those of you who have been enjoying the #Bertie photos, here's a selection of him today playing in a ball pit, excited with a balloon and intrigued by some fish.
-
And here's #bertie again, as I collect my work phone from the office, shouting at me from the house.
he's not gotten any real words yet. He says mum and dad out of context and has a noise that means dog and another that he's hungry, but not really putting things together in a meaningful way. -
#Bertie is 10 months old today. The 4th of October 2025 was on a saturday. What a day!
he's chatting while I begin to make coffee in this clip.
Sorry, the gain in the audio is a bit excessive! -
Friday.
the dog is yoyoing between the windowsill, where she can keep an eye on outside and bake, and the sofa, where she can lie in the relative cool but not see what's going on.
Baby #Bertie was up at 02:00 with me as per usual over the last week, this heat wave has really done a number on his sleeping pattern. He's down briefly now while I do some work, but I daresay he'll be needing a bottle soon enough.
The big one plus mum have rocked off to Birmingham for a post academic year shopping trip, so it's just me, the dog and the sprog for the moment.
Actually had a reasonably comfortable hour with my mother and her new boyfriend at the local pub last night.
Aaand there the baby goes, up after only half an hour down. It's never ending! -
So I've had a pretty slow start back in as the systems come back online. #Bertie's been enjoying my replacement childcare services
-
Tuesday.
Work are still dragging their heals about getting my system access restored post-parental leave. As long as I keep my annual leave entitlement and salary, they can piss about all they like as far as I'm concerned!
Meanwhile, we've taken the difficult decision to employ some childcare to cover the 2 days of the week the wife and I are both working, because although she's been back for months, I now need to be too. And someone has to look after #Bertie (who is 9 months old on Saturday).
Yesterday he went for a short pushchair journey to buy some bread with the nanny. Today its his first time off in the car with her, to deliver some ingredients to child no. 1's school and attend a baby playgroup. It's a really weird feeling. Lils didn't go to any form of childcare because one of us was always available, so her nursery placement started well-after she was able to communicate verbally and coherently.
This feels different. Necessarily unsettling, perhaps is the best descriptor I can come up with.

Friday. I put #Bertie down to sleep. I make a coffee, and he's outside ready for a walk!
-
Thursday.
Despite only sleeping for about 40 minutes last night, #Bertie was remarkably cheerful this morning, as shown.he ate a whole slice of bread dipped in a soft-boiled egg and a yoghurt for breakfast, too. Really glad that the business end is becoming a little more formed now he's on some more solid food.

Tuesday.
#Bertie is progressing well with his eating. He really enjoyed some homemade hash brown the other day (the shop-bought stuff is far too salty). He's also been quite partial to the mango, which was an acquired taste, but we've persevered and that's gone well. Two particular lines on the NHS feeding guide perplexed me, though:
1. Keep distractions to a minimum during mealtimes and avoid sitting your baby in front of the television, phone or tablet.
Do people really feed their babies with phones or tablets? Why? I can understand having it on in a busy household when everyone's more independent maybe. But when you're feeding a baby? Is this just something I'd not do by virtue of needing to hear more clearly?
2. cut small, round foods, like grapes and cherry tomatoes, into quarters (4 small pieces).
It's the parenthetical here. Have we really progressed to the stage of needing to explain what a quarter is? Madness.
-
Friday.
Yesterday saw #Bertie introduced to some solid food for the first time. he was unsure about the carrot to begin with, but this morning has been diving at the spoon for breakfast.
-
Saturday.
Hard to believe that little #Bertie is already 20 weeks old. The weeks have flown. He's now got a couple of teeth, has just gone up a size in nappies and enjoys pretending he can walk by being stomped across the carpet, supported under the arms.
he likes warm milk, falling asleep to BBC Radio 3 Unwind Or a Debbie Wiseman album when I'm in charge or being hummed-at by his mother when she is, and owns a small but growing collection of hairs from my beard, which he plucks with great force and seemingly all signs of enjoyment.
He's started to giggle vocally and is almost too big for his baby bath.
he has, as of yet, not provided any verbal feedback on life, other than to demand "ning!" routinely, which we assume is his request to be fed.
He's also, as pictured, literally, if not quite figuratively, found his feet.
I've hashtagged his name from this point forward because not everyone wants to see the #BabyPhotos.

Iโve made sure that Bertie Botts Every Flavour Plant Clipping is watered and looking alive each morning before I left for work. So far so good, meaning so far so not dead.

First there was a plant that belonged to my step kidsโ step motherโs mother. When she passed away, their step mother took the plant home with her.
When my step daughter, Bellana, got her own place she took a clipping of that plant and used it to grow a new plant for her apartment. She named the plant Burt. I donโt know if the original plant had a name or not.
During the early days of the Covid lockdown Bellana took her plant, Burt, to our house. While it was with us, Bellana gave us a clipping to grow another plant. We named ours Bertha. Bertha is now gigantic and still growing, but much of her early growth is dying off. The plant is alive, but it doesnโt seem terribly happy. I got nervous about the plantโs prognosis so I did a thing.
I took another clipping and put it into a glass of water. Nothing happened for what seemed like a very long time and I was afraid that I was going to fail in my attempt to keep Bertha alive forever. Then, late last week, a new root grew! Then a second new root! Excellent! The new clipping is alive!
A few minutes ago I put it into a pot full of potting soil. Will it survive the transfer? I hope so, but I have no way to know. It has plenty of soil, food, and water. I will watch it like a hawk to make sure it doesnโt lack for anything until it proves to me that itโs thriving. After that Iโll just treat it like a normal plant and let it grow like crazy the way Bertha did.
Say hello to the new baby plant. I have decided to name it Bertie Botts Every Flavour Plant Clipping, which I will probably just shorted to Bertie Botts Every Flavor Plantโฆ or maybe just Bertie.
Wish our new green friend luck!
