"Portrait of a Woman," Berthe Morisot, 1872-5.
Morisot (1841-95) was a pioneering member of the Impressionists, and one of the "grandes dames" of the movement. While not as admired in this country as her friend Mary Cassatt is, she is still a very respected artist.
The sitter for this portrait is unknown, but many feel it's Morisot's sister Edma (1839-1921), herself an artist and very close to Berthe. Edma and Berthe were trained together and had a studio together, but Edma married and decided to scale back her painting. She did sit for her sister multiple times.
Sadly, only two known paintings by Edma survive; for unknown reasons, she destroyed most of her work after her marriage.

"The Bowl of Milk," Berthe Morisot, 1890.
Morisot (1841-95) was one of the founding female Impressionists, along with American Mary Cassatt. As is sadly frequent with female painters of the time, she was denied the same opportunities as the male painters but turned them to her advantage, by depicting scenes of everyday life and female subjects, but with a then avent-garde style.
The subject is young Gabrielle Dufour, a girl she knew in the village of Mézy, where Morisot and her family stayed for a while. She did a number of pictures of Dufour; sadly, nothing is known of the girl's life after this. One assumes she had the life of any other village girl.
Morisot was very close to Edouard Manet and married his brother, Eugene; her daughter Julie's diaries, published as "Growing Up with the Impressionists," give a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of these treasured painters.

"Lucie Leon at the Piano," Bertha Morisot, 1892.
Morisot (1841-95) was, along with Mary Cassatt, one of the great female Impressionists. She was a close friend and student of Edouard Manet (and some claim a love affair, but evidence is scant), and married his brother. His influence can be seen in her work, especially here.
Although she did a number of landscapes, Morisot's great interest, like Cassatt, was in private, intimate scenes, often painting families at home. Here we feel some pity for poor Lucie Leon, so bored-looking, sitting at her piano.
Leon herself was to become a successful pianist as an adult, so while she looks like she wishes she was doing ANYTHING else, at least she came to embrace music as a career.
Morisot sadly died young, of pneumonia contracted while nursing her daughter, but during her lifetime she was a very successful artist. Today her work fetches record prices at auctions.

"In a Park," Berthe Morisot, c. 1874.
We all know Morisot (I made a rhyme). This pastel scene shows the influence of naturalist Camille Corot and Impressionist Edouard Manet...who would become her brother-in-law.
Morisot, along with Cassatt, is one of the great female Impressionists, and one of the big favorite female artists today.

"The Artist's Sister at a Window," Berthe Morisot, 1869.
Morisot (1841-1895) was one of the Grandes Dames of Impressionism. I've talked about her before so instead I'll focus on the image.
The woman in the picture is Berthe's sister Edma, sitting before an open window, looking down at a Japanese fan as if lost in thought. It also looks like there might be a black velvet choker around her neck, which would be interesting, as that was frequently seen to denote a courtesan. Is Berthe trying to tell a story here? Likely not, that wasn't the Impressionist style, and it might not be a choker at all.

"Berthe Morisot and her Dog," Berthe Morisot, 1893.
Morisot (1841-95) hardly needs introduction; she was one of the great Impressionists and an amazing artist in general. She was married to Eugène Manet, the brother of Édouard Manet and a decent artist in his own right, and their only child was Julie, seen here. This is painted in the year following Eugène's death; Berthe herself was to pass on a couple years later, leaving Julie an orphan at 16.
Here we have Julie in a mourning dress, being comforted by her loyal dog. There is an anxiety about this picture, as if Berthe is dealing with her grief over losing her husband and fears for her daughter.
Julie would grow up to live a long and happy life, passing on herself in 1966. She published her teenage diary, now titled "Growing Up with the Impressionists" which is still the major source for much information about the painter's lives and personalities. When her mother died, she became the ward of poet Stéphane Mallarmé, continued to pose for Renoir and other painters, and married artist Ernest Rouart, so she was involved in the arts all her life.
