Frederick Taylor's "The Berlin Wall" cuts through Cold War myths like a sharp knife through old bread. The wall didn't rise overnight. It grew slowly, brick by brick, as lies often do.

Construction of the #BerlinWall began 65 years ago #OnThisDay
Its fall posed various questions. Was a united Germany dangerous? How to protect the East’s heritage? And how should the Wall be remembered?

‘A symbol of resistance’: the fight to save a treehouse built on no man’s land next to the Berlin Wall.
Supporters fear the structure could be torn down as a safety hazard and want it to become a memorial to postwar foreign labourers in honour of its Turkish creator.

A young border guard jumped the wire on his first day of duty. A family floated across a canal in the dark. These are real stories. Frederick Taylor tells them all.

The wall fell on November 9, 1989. The world changed that night. Frederick Taylor makes sure you feel every second of it.

@gedankenstuecke Thank you for sharing this fascinating look into the current perspective on #Nazi #Germany of today’s Germans! 🙏
I’d like to add two comments. First, I visited a German university in December 1989 and was invited to a large Christmas party. It was a jubilant atmosphere (the #BerlinWall had just fallen), but I noticed one elderly man not interacting with anyone. I asked about him, and was told he was the host’s grandfather, who had been a #Nazi.
One more thing…

Some people died within sight of the West. Taylor does not spare the reader from that truth. This book hits hard and stays with you.

Most history books focus on dates and politics. This one focuses on people. Read my Berlin Wall Frederick Taylor review and see why.

The Berlin Wall by Frederick Taylor. Gave it 4 stars. Solid research. Clean writing. A deeply human account of the Cold War's most brutal border.

The US, Britain, and France watched the wall go up. They did not act. That failure haunted millions of people in the East for 28 years.

@2legged you operate under the assumption that I approve of everything the US has done and feel the need to justify it. I do not
I simply resist over simplifications. US = bad in everything it does. It’s simply not the case. As mentioned before #WWII and the defeat of #fascism is an obvious positive case.
I’d suggest the collapse of the #BerlinWall wa a good thing and being a bulwark against #Stalin was pretty helpful to folks in post war Europe.

Tunnels. Car trunks. Homemade hot air balloons. People risked everything to cross the Berlin Wall. Frederick Taylor tells every one of their stories.

August 13, 1961. Families woke up cut off from each other. Guards had orders to shoot anyone who tried to cross. Frederick Taylor does not spare the reader.

Taylor pulled from secret East German state files to write this book. That access makes all the difference. Read my full review.
