The Berlin Wall went up overnight.
Families woke up cut off. Guards had orders to shoot. Some people died within sight of the West.
Frederick Taylor tells the full story — the politicians, the victims, and the ones who fought back.
This is the Cold War history book that stays with you long after the last page.

It is no coincidence that this year’s Berlinale Retrospective was titled “Lost in the 90s.” The burning problems…

"I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be heroes, just for one dayWe can be heroes
We can be heroes
We can be heroes
Just for one day" -

Eleven years ago this week, I cycled along where the Berlin Wall used to be, following the Lichtgrenze. A special way of celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2014.

Today is the *#DayOfDestinyForTheGermans*
On @Wikipedia, there are many historic events listed for today, #9November.
I will highlight 4 that are relevant to #democracy:
1. 1918: #FakeNews leads 2 proclamation of 1st #GermanRepublic
2. 1923: Bloody suppression of the #Hitler's #BeerHallPutschPutsch
3. 1938: #NS-#NightOfBrokenGlass with #deportation of #Jews from 11/10

May we build more bridges as we tear down the remaining walls. ✊

I think that it's important to remember that in these days of . . . gestures vaguely at . . . everything . . . that there is historical precedent for having some hope that things will get better.
On November 9, 1989:
The fall of the Berlin Wall was a pivotal moment in history that symbolized the end of Cold War-era division and repression in Europe; it led directly to the reunification of Germany and inspired a wave of democratic movements across Eastern Europe. This event demonstrated the collective power of ordinary citizens and transformed the global order by breaking down the barriers—both physical and ideological—between East and West, encouraging greater cooperation, freedom, and openness for millions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Wall
However , also, on November 9, 1938:
Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, was a pivotal, state-orchestrated anti-Jewish pogrom carried out across Nazi Germany on November 9–10, 1938, marking a decisive escalation in Nazi persecution of Jews from discrimination and exclusion to systemic, state-sanctioned violence. Over those two days, more than 1,000 synagogues were burned, around 7,500 Jewish businesses were vandalized, dozens of Jews were murdered, and about 30,000 men were arrested and sent to concentration camps, signaling the start of mass incarceration simply because of their faith. The dramatic destruction, carried out by Nazi paramilitary groups and supported by civilians, shattered any remaining illusions of Jewish safety in Germany, directly foreshadowed the Holocaust to come, and shocked the world with its scale and brutality.

So - you know - we've got both historical precedents covered.

Reading this below on the 36th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and by extension the symbolic end of the GDR, the place I grew up in... with neighbors and parents of classmates belonging to the Stasi (east German secret police), the fear my own parents might be disappeared — years later seeing the thickness of the files of surveillance materials the state/stasi had collected on my family... remembering early autumn 1989, joining friends protesting in the streets every Monday after school, every week more and more people joining, from all walks of life, slowly replacing our fear with a feeling of invincibility, then the unthinkable (positive) happening in early November... the wall falling, driving into West Berlin for the first time the day after (and getting stuck in the largest traffic jams the country has ever known). The '90s were born that day and anything seemed possible...
Reading this post by @aphyr is intensely moving, not just today, and in many ways the situation already is so, so much worse and so much more brutal, more like 1930/40s Germany and numerous other dictatorships throughout the 20th century...
I Want You to Understand Chicago
https://aphyr.com/posts/397-i-want-you-to-understand-chicago
"I write to leave a record, to stare at the track of the tornado. I write to leave a warning. I write to call for help."
"I want you to understand, regardless of your politics, the historical danger of a secret police. What happens when a militia is deployed in our neighborhoods and against our own people. Left unchecked their mandate will grow; the boundaries of acceptable identity and speech will shrink. I want you to think about elections in this future. I want you to understand that every issue you care about—any hope of participatory democracy—is downstream of this."
