Massimo Faggioli cautions against Catholic officials canonizing Benedict XVI precipitously as they did with John Paul II. He states,
"Canonizing popes means canonizing the papacy -- by popes in the Vatican. The Vatican used to have less control over canonization process (technically, a trial)."
Then there's the matter of how the papacy has handled the sexual abuse situation in the Catholic church….

My brief bit of commentary: following Benedict's death, Pope Francis characterized his predecessor as "noble and kind." The word "kind" stands out for me.
In what moral universe is it an act of kindness to characterize an entire group of human beings, as Benedict did, as born "disordered" and as "disordered" human beings in their affective lives?

The death of Benedict offers the church a chance to put his and John Paul II's failed "restorationist" project behind itself and to return to the unfinished, even abandoned, project of Vatican II on which bishops of the entire church agreed in its last ecumenical council.

The synodal process has solicited input from Catholics worldwide, wtih the following result:
"Collated responses from millions of Catholics record a widespread desire for an agenda of 'radical inclusion'. This encompasses equality for women within the church, greater focus on the plight of poor and marginalised groups such as migrants, a welcoming approach to LGBTQ Catholics, and an overhaul on church governance in relation to sexual abuse."

As the Guardian notes, the defensive siege mentality Benedict encouraged for the Catholic church has served neither the church nor the world well. It deliberately turned its back on Vatican II and shored up the fortress model of church that Vatican II had abandoned to place the church in constructive engagement with the world around it.

"In his obituary of Pope Benedict (31 December), Peter Stanford writes that membership of the Hitler Youth was compulsory for the Ratzinger boys. It was not. My sister, brother and I are very proud that our father, Walter Gomm, born in 1925 in Königsberg, now Kaliningrad, resisted the pressure from his father (afraid for his only child) to become a member. Joseph Ratzinger had a choice. He didn’t take it."
