  1. “Gone too soon at 93 – no, really
    A former Belgian diplomat charged
for the 1961 murder of Congolese
    leader Patrice Lumumba has died
before he could stand trial. Étienne
    Davignon was accused of involvement
    in Lumumba’s unlawful detention
    and transfer to Katanga Province
    before his assassination by Belgian-
    backed rebels. Lumumba’s killing
remains one of the most significant
    political assassinations of the post-
colonial era and a lasting indictment
    on Belgium’s colonial history. The
    93-year-old, who denied wrongdoing,
was the last surviving suspect in the
    Belgian investigation into the murder.
No consequences: No Belgian will now ever
stand trial for killing Patrice Lumumba.”

The Colonial past still haunts many EU countries. None of which have managed to reconcile with their part in African history. I’m not sure any of those countries, Belgium included, ever will.

  2. Turns out playing "Divide and Rule" on a country for a hundred fucking years has some knock-on effects on the formation of national institutions

    @Maria1958

Things are far, far more bizarre than an "anachronistic survival".

AIUI this is a bizarre as Pol Pot's grandson speak out against a genocide.

Or Hilter's great granddaughter speaking out against a genocide.

This family swims in #BloodMoney from their very own #PersonalGenocide in the #BelgianCongo.

  5. Been listening to #ColumMcCann perform his novel #Twist.

And I hear in interviews that he sees it relating to #JosephConrad's #TheHeartOfDarkness.

And I find that I've somehow missed that The Heart of Darkness is set in the horror of the #BelgianCongo genocides.

So next to listen to Conrad's book.

    And am wondering about ethics.
    (No, not ones about escape.)

Would I be OK reading about how Sherlock Holmes helped bring an end to the genocidal activities carried out in the #BelgianCongo in the service of the King of #Belgium, #LeopoldII?

This #GenocideForProfit was of a similar scale to the killings, based on ethnicity, by the Nazis.
(10 million compared to 17 million.)
