Heute hätte der vor vier Jahren verstorbene Mikis Theodorakis seinen 100. Geburtstag gefeiert. Vor 55 Jahren konnte eine internationale #Solidaritätsbewegung die #Freilassung des von der griechischen #Militärjunta inhaftierten und gefolterten #Komponisten, #Schriftstellers und #Politikers erkämpfen."Am 21. April 1967 kam es zum Putsch der faschistischen #Obristen in #Griechenland. Theodorakis ging sofort in den #Untergrund und veröffentlichte schon zwei Tage später einen ersten Aufruf zum #Widerstand. Seine Musik wurde verboten, der Besitz seiner Platten, sogar das Singen und Hören seiner Lieder wurden mit #Gefängnisstrafe geahndet. Am 21. August wurde er verhaftet und im Hauptquartier der #Sicherheitspolizei physisch und seelisch gefoltert.
(WikiPedia)Eine internationale #Solidaritätsbewegung, angeführt unter anderem von Dmitri #Schostakowitsch, Leonard #Bernstein, Arthur #Miller und Harry #Belafonte, setzte sich für seine Freilassung ein. Am 13. April 1970 gelang es dann, den Junta-Chef Georgios #Papadopoulos zu überzeugen, #Theodorakis ins #Exil nach #Frankreich zu entlassen."

De Amerikaanse zanger Harry Belafonte (96) is overleden. Hij werd wereldberoemd met liedjes als ‘Matilda’ en de ‘Banana Boat Song’, op het Caraïbische ritme van de calypso. Zo zacht als zijn stem klonk, zo scherp was zijn visie op gelijke rechten voor minderheden.

The album where those two elements most overlapped, "Paradise in Gazankulu," is one of my favorites, appropriating African styles a la "Graceland," but with a mission to expose and overthrow Apartheid and colonialism.
An example: "Amadla," which sounds like a love song until you learn that Amadla means "power".

Farewell Harry #Belafonte. Einer der Menschen, deren Größe im Laufe meines Lebens sich scheibchenweise mir erschloss. Konträr zu manchen Scheinriesen wurde er immer größer ...Selten hat mich das Spektrum eines Künstlers mehr beeindruckt. Kein Wunder, dass er dasselbe Schicksal trug wie die große Makeba: viel zu oft reduziert auf seine Hitparaden-kompatiblen Songs.
