Sewing progresses slowly. Have to refer to the manual for everything because i’m a beginner sewer plus totally out of practice. Today it was winding the bobbin and rethreading the machine. Manual is really clear which helps. #sewing #beginnersewing

Started cutting out fabric for a drawstring bag. This is the first one i've made in ages so using cheap thrifted fabric to test it out before committing to some more expensive stuff. Hoping to sort out any mistakes. May need new sewing scissors. Can't find the good ones. #sewing #BeginnerSewing

Hemmed the shower curtain. Only a rough job (turned once not twice). Took me ages of measuring and fiddling to get this far. Do you reckon near enough is good enough or should i turn it up a centimetre? #sewing #beginnersewist #beginnersewing

Started sewing the market bag today. Not sure how far i'll get but it's a start.

Plan for the morning: work on my market bag after cutting out the shapes at the weekend.
What actually happened: the exhaustive house search for the extra bobbins i bought a week ago since i only have 2 (already loader in white and dark grey) and i wanted to use yellow or green on this. The bobbins and the case are clear plastic which adds to degree of difficulty. Ordered a couple more lots online.
Found the originals 2 mins later, down the front side of a drawer. Aaaargh!

Slowly making progress with my simple market bag. Took me a little while to figure out placing the pattern on the old gingham tablecloth. Then the green lining material was total sh*t to cut out.
Had cut again this morning - first go was unsalvageable. Lucky it's thrifted material. Bit dubious about how easy it's going to be to sew if it's that fiddly to cut. But if nothing else, it'll be a learning experience. Sew la vie!

Printed out a free pattern for a reversible bag (after almost endless browsing - so many options!) Just cut it out and taped it together. Now have to see if i have enough fabric from my recent thrift score to work with this pattern. All the fabric is now sitting in the washing basket after being washed and line dried. So feel like things are happening, even if slowly.

These two cards wrapped with chord and fringe were only a $1-2 each. And the zippers were about 50c each (maybe 1 longer one was $1). No idea what i'll use the purple fringe stuff for but too gorgeous to leave behind.

Went to a destash sale at a local fabric recycling shop (like a thrift shop) called Upcycle. Bought a ton of stuff for beginner projects and only cost me $35 all up.
One deal was to absolutely cram this lot of bits and bobs into the fabric bag provided for $5. Bargain! Plus there were 2 sets of knitting needles (not pictured since i gave them to Aunty at lunch).

Forgot to add - this is the little bag.

Made a little drawstring bag using the instructions from the beginner sewing course. But i did this one all by myself at home. Small thing but very proud i worked it all out on my own machine. And learned from a few mistakes along the way. Builds a little confidence and gives me some practice in a low stakes kind of way. Satisfying!

Looking for fabric to upcycle into sewing projects, found where i'd stashed some old tablecloths. Funny how you get attached to some items - have no issue contemplating cutting off any the gingham and check seersucker material for my beginner projects. Just can't with the purple 70s and yellow rose one - will have to wait till I'm more confident with sewing:

The spare room sewing space. Also storage for everything space. Where do you sew?

Threaded up the machine and sewed a line along an old tea towel. All went well though i can now confirm from personal experience that the needle is *fucking* sharp. Only a flesh wound 😆

Having a go with my sewing machine for the first time today. Success with bobbin winding - yippee! Next task: threading the machine. Fingers crossed.

Last of my beginner sewing lessons. Made a large drawstring bag. Very happy with that. And can see it would be easy to make more.

Finished off my oven mitt at the beginner's sewing class today. So happy! Or maybe sew happy! 😁

We were told we could do the quilting with either straight lines (like a diagonal criss cross) or just random squiggles and swirls (which is what i chose to do in yellow thread). Doing that made my brain feel happy (if that makes sense).

Went to my 2nd sewing lesson for beginners this morning at the library. It was great. The teacher explained a lot about patterns which i can see will be really useful. And we started making some oven mitts. Cut out the pieces and started quilting the outer layer to the batting. Had a blast!

Went to my first beginner's sewing class this morning. Learned some hand sewing (slip and ladder stitches plus sewing on a button), how to clean and set up a machine and played with using a range stitches (on paper first) plus sewing different shapes (right angles and spiral). Only 6 ppl in class and the teacher was really lovely. So a very happy start.

Signed up for 4 beginner sewing classes that go for a couple of hours once a week. Only possible because the time partially overlaps when mum's carer is here. Did check in with mum and she said to go for it. It's being run at one of the local libraries. Hoping the course will give me the confidence to try sewing on the old Janome machine my Aunty gave me.

Completed a little sewing project, made a carry case for knitting needles. Has three rows for different heights with varying widths so can hold a good mix of sizes. Managed to use left over fabric so only needed to buy the orange ribbon.

Break out the sad trombone, I am failing miserably at every turn trying to make the easiest #sewing pattern in the world, pajama pants. #BeginnerSewing
