Oggi è l'Epifania.
Due personaggi nella nostra tradizione portano i doni: un uomo invecchiato molto male, sovrappeso, con una barba da homeless, eppure lo consideriamo buono e bello. Lui viagga sulla slitta con le renne volanti.
Poi c'è lei, una donna malvestita, bruttarella, anche un po' incazzosa. Deve volare su una scopa.Come le narrazioni possono dire tanto di una cultura, eh?

¿Sabían que la figura de La Befana, que según la tradición italiana llegará la noche del 5 de enero repartiendo regalos no tiene su origen en el folclore navideño moderno, sino en antiguos ritos agrícolas romanos y precristianos vinculados al solsticio de invierno?
Su nombre es una corrupción fonética de la palabra griega "Epifanía", pero su iconografía de anciana que vuela sobre una escoba la conecta directamente con las divinidades romanas Strenia (diosa del año nuevo y los regalos) y con ritos de purificación de los campos. En la antigüedad, se creía que figuras femeninas volaban sobre los cultivos durante las doce noches posteriores al solsticio para bendecir la fertilidad de la tierra en el ciclo que comenzaba.
La escoba, originalmente no era solo un medio de transporte, sino un símbolo de purificación. Se creía que la Befana "barría" los problemas y energías del año viejo para dejar espacio a lo nuevo.
La Befana a veces reparte carbón, aunque hoy se asocia con el "castigo" para los niños que no se portaron bien, en su origen el carbón era un regalo positivo relacionado con el fuego y la ceniza, elementos esenciales para fertilizar la tierra y garantizar la supervivencia durante el invierno.
A diferencia de la figura comercial de Santa Claus, la Befana conserva una estética rústica: viste ropas remendadas y un pañuelo en la cabeza (pezzola), representando el final de un ciclo y la sabiduría de la vejez que da paso al renacimiento de la primavera.

Since they get candies and chocolates all year long every time a kid in school has their birthday, and even more during the Christmas period preceding the Befana, I mix up sweets and candies with some foreign snacks they've never tasted before. It could be Pokémon-themed sweets and beverages from Japanese stores or banana chips from Madagascar.
