You might be tickled by a charity in the UK, formerly known as "Sustrans" who have, among other things, made it their mission to turn disused rail lines into bicycle-paths & footpaths.

  2. The fundamental problem with #branchLines of course is that one end is in a less important place so won't be used that much, so trains tend not to be used very efficiently. If the line continues to another city, overlapping journeys to or from both ends will give a much better coverage. This is a fundamental flaw of the #Beeching cuts, where branch lines were closed for this reason but new ones were created by cutting off connections.

  3. Advent Day Seven

The Beeching Report Cuts were felt all across the UK, but Galloway has never really recovered from the loss of its train line from Dumfries to Portpatrick.
I've done a number of videos on our lost Railways, but this one about Castle Douglas is probably the best place to start!

  4. I did a wee history video all about it, as well as a few others covering some of our lost Railways of Galloway.

  5. This is Loch Skerrow Halt in its heyday. One of the most remote stations in Galloway, it closed with the rest of the line because of the Beeching Report Cuts.
You can hike out to its remains from Loch Stroan, takes over an hour, but its a worthwhile journey.

  6. During its working lifetime, Loch Skerrow Halt was one of the remotest stations in the country. All that remains now are a couple of platforms, the ruins of the railway workers cottages and the Scots Pine planted to act as a windbreak.

  7. The station for Gatehouse on the Portpatrick Line was six miles above the town in the hills at Dromore. Two Viaducts were built to get the line to that station, only one of which stands today.

  8. Lost Railways of Galloway: Parton – New Galloway
My latest wee history video, featuring the beautiful landscape of the Glenkens in Galloway, and the railways lost to the Beeching cuts there.

  9. The steps and path leading up from the #village to the #nature reclaimed old #railway line, now part of the national cycle network. Before being destroyed by the #Beeching report, this line once brought visitors from far away. They were attracted to the numerous high quality, specialist shops, including a ladies dress shop and milliners. Now there is nothing but one tiny convenience store in the space of someone's front room. How different things would have been if that line had continued.

  10. Exciting plans to relink Bideford Tarka Line railway with rest of Devon

Wonderful if this goes ahead. So many areas of Devon & Cornwall completely cut off since their railways closed in the 1960s.

  12. Devon and Cornwall's lost and abandoned railways

    devonlive.com/news/history/dev

So many railways and stations closed nationally, cutting off their respective communities. A very sad period.

If left, you can bet you bottom Dollar that #Thatcher would have closed them.

A few have been reopened or are footpaths or #cycle routes, but it's not the same.

Given problems with so many cars on the roads today, a good number should never have been closed.
