I got my husband to agree to go to #Orvelte for the #DagVanDeOogst this year. We booked a #BedAndBreakfast the night before, so we go sleep on a #farm there and go early.I remember as a kid visiting an #historical #village in #Drenthe that held an annual event showing stuff from the old time. It was great but I dunno which village it was. Anyways, I wanted to go to something like that to show my husband some of the #culture and #history of where I'm from. Orvelte seems like a good bet for that.

Random email of the day: Southern NSW Local Health District informing me that as we supply *rainwater* for consumption at our guest cottages, we require signage to that effect at the cottages and a Quality Assurance Program (essentially a risk register) lodged with NSW Health.
I'm all for regulation and safety, but this seems a touch heavy-handed and unnecessary. It's rainwater stored in concrete tanks. It doesn't get much cleaner.
Anyway, here I am doing said Quality Assurance Program and ordering the approved signs.

We just had a family of 7 (!) through our large cottage - parents and 5 kids from 15 to 4 months. While you accommodate them, you hope they are capable of keeping the place clean. These folks left it as good as anyone ever has. We need to clean for the purpose of readying for the next guests tomorrow, but you’d barely know they’d been here.
Props to those people for having their shit very together, because managing a family that size is nontrivial.

This young Jay was too big to get on the feeder but had learned that he could reach by holding on to the main pole. The 'Eurasian Jay', part of the corvid family, are regulars in our garden here on the west coast of Scotland.

Skills or tasks everyone should have to complete successfully to be accepted as an adult:
- change a tyre
- paint a wall or ceiling
- cook half a dozen basic healthy dinners
- keep a house plant alive
- do a decent house clean
- change your sheets regularly (same for towels)
- hand wash dishes in the appropriate order (glass, cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils and pots/dishes)
- do the full pass at laundry - wash it, dry it (ideally outside), fold it, put it awayRecent young guests at our cottages need practice on their dishes.

Question for people running an accommodation business, or staying at one, especially a rural B&B like ours:
Is it okay to arrive late in the evening (well after dark) with two additional unannounced guests and expect them to be accommodated, even if the space you have booked is capable of providing for them?
I’ve been sitting on publishing a review for some recent guests who did this and decided to note that letting us know earlier in the day would have been the better option. If they did it to us, they’d do it to others.

I had to disappoint them; this is a rural locale and stuff closes at lunchtime. She was both surprised and disappointed. The Brazilian guests I just took some extra firewood to (they were burning the fire at full vent open…) are doing nothing to dissuade me from believing that their people are essentially carnivorous. They're sitting on the veranda cooking up a bunch of different meat and just grazing on it, punctuated occasionally by lettuce.

Cleaning a guest cottage after a family group of 5 people visited. This is one of those times (and it’s almost always larger groups) where we regret advertising the cottage as suitable for groups. 6 bags of trash in 1-1/2 days, and their dog had clearly been allowed on a bed to leave filthy marks on white linen.
We don’t charge a cleaning fee to guests, because we do it ourselves. Neither do we charge a pet fee, which other places definitely do. When people abuse the clearly provided information about our place, it’s a bit disheartening.
No 5 star review this time.

In 'Bed & Breakfast' zagen kijkers dinsdag hoe de Limburgse Dennis en Alain met veel trots hun verblijf aan de andere deelnemers lieten zien. Hoewel de bed and breakfast van alle luxe is voorzien, ontbreekt één cruciaal onderdeel: het ontbijt.

And we're 2-for-2 on well-kept guest cottages. THat means two easier cleans today before new guests arrive tomorrow.
The visitors in the big cottage even left us a lovely note in our guest book.

It’s always nice to go to clean one of the guest cottages and find the guests have left it in really good nick. It makes the cleaning effort go very smooth.
These last folks made sure there were fresh bags in the bins, put everything back where it was, and swept the floor. It’s a step or so more than we ask. -
