Just arrived at the #BedAndBreakfast in #Orvelte. Took a little walk before relaxing for the evening. Tomorrow we go around fully.

On our way here, my husband saw a deer running over the road for the first time. Despite me warning many times that that can happen this side of the country, he was quite shocked it actually happened :mastorofl:.

Tomorrow they also hold the Day Of The Harvest here, which is why we we choose to come today. It'll be great to show my husband some of the #culture and #history of where I grew up. Then he can see the old way of #countryside living here, as well as see the beautiful #Drents #klederdracht 😍.

I got my husband to agree to go to #Orvelte for the #DagVanDeOogst this year. We booked a #BedAndBreakfast the night before, so we go sleep on a #farm there and go early.

I remember as a kid visiting an #historical #village in #Drenthe that held an annual event showing stuff from the old time. It was great but I dunno which village it was. Anyways, I wanted to go to something like that to show my husband some of the #culture and #history of where I'm from. Orvelte seems like a good bet for that.

Random email of the day: Southern NSW Local Health District informing me that as we supply *rainwater* for consumption at our guest cottages, we require signage to that effect at the cottages and a Quality Assurance Program (essentially a risk register) lodged with NSW Health.

I'm all for regulation and safety, but this seems a touch heavy-handed and unnecessary. It's rainwater stored in concrete tanks. It doesn't get much cleaner.

Anyway, here I am doing said Quality Assurance Program and ordering the approved signs.

We just had a family of 7 (!) through our large cottage - parents and 5 kids from 15 to 4 months. While you accommodate them, you hope they are capable of keeping the place clean. These folks left it as good as anyone ever has. We need to clean for the purpose of readying for the next guests tomorrow, but you’d barely know they’d been here.

Props to those people for having their shit very together, because managing a family that size is nontrivial.

South Gloucestershire man jailed after booking Mumbles B&B to meet “underage girl”

49‑year‑old Rodolfa Galvao, from Yate in South Gloucestershire, had been communicating online with what he thought was a 14‑year‑old girl. In reality, the account was a decoy operated by a volunteer group.

Galvao arranged to meet in Swansea in July and was challenged by members of the group when he arrived at a city centre bowling alley carrying a rose and a bar of chocolate. Police were called and he was arrested before he could check in to the Mumbles accommodation he had booked for two nights.

A search of his phone revealed sexually explicit messages sent to the decoy account.

At Swansea Crown Court, Galvao pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child under 16 following grooming. He was sentenced to 14 months in prison, placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years, and made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.

“He poses a danger to children”

Detective Constable Rebecca Brain of South Wales Police said:

“Rodolfa Galvao believed he was communicating with a child and still sent explicit sexual messages to them, even going to the lengths of arranging to meet them.

It is clear that he poses a danger to children, and it is fortunate that the ‘child’ at the other end of the conversation was not real. He is fully deserving of a spell in prison.”

The court heard Galvao had no previous convictions. Judge Paul Thomas KC said there was “only one reason” why the defendant had booked the Mumbles hotel room and that he showed “no real remorse, only self‑pity.”

Support for survivors

South Wales Police said they recognised how difficult it can be for survivors of sexual abuse to come forward, but urged victims to seek support.

“We hope cases like this one provide reassurance that victims will be listened to, treated with dignity and respect, and will be supported throughout the judicial process,” a spokesperson said.

- change your sheets regularly (same for towels)
- hand wash dishes in the appropriate order (glass, cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils and pots/dishes)
- do the full pass at laundry - wash it, dry it (ideally outside), fold it, put it away

Recent young guests at our cottages need practice on their dishes.

Cuban B&B’s (or casas particulares, as they’re known in Cuba) sustain communities, create local jobs, and offer travelers an authentic cultural experience. But the business has been decimated by US #sanctions.

#Trump’s sanctions banned cruise ships, restricted flights, and placed Cuba back on the US ”State sponsors of terrorism” blacklist, changing everything. #Airbnb stopped paying Cuban hosts without international accounts, and #Expedia was forced to halt its operations.

From Swansea’s streets to site work: Dean rebuilds his future through housing project

Dean, 44, is currently working on the refurbishment of a donated property in Swansea as part of a placement with Cii Construction’s Community Impact Initiative. The project, run in partnership with homelessness charity The Wallich, offers people with lived experience of homelessness the chance to gain new skills and rebuild confidence through hands-on work.

“I used to be a roofer,” said Dean. “But after everything, I’ve been looking for a way to get back into working in the trades and seeing where it takes me. This has been great just to get back into a routine and get a bit more confidence.”

Dean quickly became a valued member of the team, taking on tasks from wall repairs to garden clearance. His tutor, Rajesh Joshi, said:

“From day one, Dean got stuck into the work. Our team were impressed with his attitude and willingness to learn. Over the course of the placement, he built his confidence, developed new skills, and left with a clearer idea of what he’d like to do next.”

The house Dean is helping to renovate is one of two donated to The Wallich by retired professors Valerie and Chris Norris. The couple, aged 71 and 77, decided to gift the properties after reassessing their finances and seeing the charity’s CEO speak on television.

“We knew how much help homeless people need,” said Valerie. “We hit upon the audacious idea of buying a house for those in need… We’re especially impressed that the Community Impact Initiative will undertake some of the refurbishment work, thereby doubling its beneficial effect.”

The homes will become part of The Wallich’s Swansea ‘Alternative to Bed and Breakfast Accommodation’ (ABBA) scheme, which provides short-term emergency housing for people experiencing homelessness.

With temporary accommodation in short supply across Wales, ABBA offers a more stable and dignified alternative to traditional B&B placements, helping residents transition into permanent housing.

Mike Bobbett, Director of Business Innovation at The Wallich, said:

“This project is the perfect example of a community response to homelessness. From the generosity of providing bricks and mortar by Val and Chris, to using the refurbishment as an opportunity for social mobility, to using the housing to tackle Wales’s housing crisis.

Dean is an inspiration and has been working so hard with us to move forward into his next chapter. This is what it’s all about.”

Question for people running an accommodation business, or staying at one, especially a rural B&B like ours:

Is it okay to arrive late in the evening (well after dark) with two additional unannounced guests and expect them to be accommodated, even if the space you have booked is capable of providing for them?

I’ve been sitting on publishing a review for some recent guests who did this and decided to note that letting us know earlier in the day would have been the better option. If they did it to us, they’d do it to others.

South Asian visitors from Blacktown staying at one of our cottages just called us asking where the nearest butcher for fresh goat or lamb is. I had to disappoint them; this is a rural locale and stuff closes at lunchtime. She was both surprised and disappointed. Not sure whether to feel empathetic or amused at the disconnect between city and rural expectations.

The Brazilian guests I just took some extra firewood to (they were burning the fire at full vent open…) are doing nothing to dissuade me from believing that their people are essentially carnivorous. They're sitting on the veranda cooking up a bunch of different meat and just grazing on it, punctuated occasionally by lettuce.

Cleaning a guest cottage after a family group of 5 people visited. This is one of those times (and it’s almost always larger groups) where we regret advertising the cottage as suitable for groups. 6 bags of trash in 1-1/2 days, and their dog had clearly been allowed on a bed to leave filthy marks on white linen.

We don’t charge a cleaning fee to guests, because we do it ourselves. Neither do we charge a pet fee, which other places definitely do. When people abuse the clearly provided information about our place, it’s a bit disheartening.

No 5 star review this time.
