I’m a little tired of hearing Beau DeMayo’s name in the same sentence as James Gunn. If you don’t know, he is the creator of Marvel’s X-Men ’97 on Disney+. He was fired the week before the show aired, making many think the show would be bad.

That is far from true. This is the best Marvel project since WandaVision.

But lately I’ve started to see people talk about Beau the way they talk about James Gunn or the fucking Snyder cut, and that behavior just feels gross. Yes, this is a queer, openly-kinky, black man writing X-Men, and that’s an ideal scenario, but there are many valid reasons for firing a writer.

Here’s what we know about DeMayo:

1. He was fired about a week before the show aired on the streaming platform.
2. He has worked on other Marvel projects.
3. He has worked on The Witcher television show on Netflix.
4. He is a queer, black man.
5. He wore a NastyPig had on stage at Comic Con. (Which I find sick as hell.)
6. He has (had?) an OnlyFans.
7. His work on seasons 1 and 2 of X-Men ’97 was finished before season 1 aired.
8. The guy loves Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, clearly.
9. His work on X-Men ’97 is clearly incredible.

Here are some rumors about Beau DeMayo:

1. He was fired because some at Disney thought his OnlyFans was “creepy.”
2. He was very difficult to work with during his time on The Witcher, allegedly being emotionally and physically abusive.

Now what I will say is that I’m not interested in defending Disney here. They’re only worried about their bottom line. Even if they fired Beau because he was an abusive asshole, they did it to protect themselves, not the rest of the staff.

But also we just don’t know enough to assume that Beau should be “immediately re-hired” and put in charge of the MCU like some on the Internet believe.

Until we know more for certain, I’m kind of tired of all the attention being directed at one writer. Beau did a great job with this show and is critical to its success, but one person doesn’t make something as big as X-Men ’97 and more people can write good X-Men than Beau DeMayo.

Disney would do well to hire another person from marginalized communities to replace Beau. It would, I believe, go a long way to quiet the drama.

And hey, if it is true that they fired him because of his OnlyFans, fuck them. We just don’t know.
