I recently re-visited the 1984 film "Beat Street", arguably one of the first wide-release movies set against the backdrop of the then-burgeoning hip-hop scene of the South Bronx. The movie assigned memorable visuals to a culture I was concurrently experiencing via radio shows like Mr. Magic's Rap Attack (WBLS) and the Saturday Night Mastermix (NYC's KISS-FM).
There's not much in the way of a complex plot (up-and-coming DJ catches a big break, beloved local graffiti artist dies tragically), but it still does a great job of showcasing what (for me) were some of the most exciting things imaginable in 1984 -- Illegal parties in abandoned buildings, street battles between rival breakdancing crews, and subway cars covered with ornate, spraypainted murals. All of this contributed to my developing romance for New York City, and played an early role in inspiring me to live there as an adult.
I will forever believe that good club DJing and good radio DJing spring from entirely different creative processes, but the oft-ballyhooed bedroom scene from "Beat Street" offers a versatile middle ground. If nothing else, it animates the idea that a great DJ can assign new meaning to other people's art through the act of thoughtful curation. Re-watching this scene for the first time in 30+ years already has me amped to get back on the air this Saturday.
