  6. @greg I'm genuinely sorry that we can't please everyone.

I rarely look back at historic shots of the front page, today I found one from February 2026, maybe the last Wayback Machine capture before new Reddit became more AI-scrape-resistant:

    Hi Friends!

296 votes, it rose to 302. A photograph of the Linux mascot was amongst FreeBSD's top thirty posts of all time.

  11. Seven years of running FreeBSD on ThinkPads alongside Linux — lessons I'd give my younger self

    <reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/> @Darknessraptor

"I daily-drive Linux at work and FreeBSD on my personal ThinkPads (T480 & P52 currently). Both laptops and both operating systems, every day. I'm the kind of person who reads freebsd-update output and Phoronix benchmarks in the same hour.

"Recently saw the "is FreeBSD really that goated" thread and it brought back the timeline of my own journey. Started with a rough —call it version 0.9 — build that barely had X11 working, evolved through five iterations, landed on something I'd call "production-stable personal desktop" around version 2.0 on FreeBSD 15.0 with a heavily customized MATE, ZFS boot environments, BastilleBSD jails for microservices, WireGuard tunnels and PF.

"If I could send a packet back in time to my earlier self, here's what I'd put in the payload: …"

Postscript: @Darknessraptor (quoted above) has joined Mastodon.

The image here is not his, it's for <reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/> because we can all agree that em dashes make scintillating conversation.

  17. OK #FediFriends, time for more #recs pls for #Linux-y stuff… 🙏 (I’m temporarily ruling out #FreeBSD, soz #Beastie fans 👿)

what file manager do you like / prefer / use?

I’m very not-happy with #Nautilus (a.k.a. “Files” 🙄) – I swear it used to be good maybe a decade or two ago but now it feels like a babby’s first file manger with minimal configuration options 😤 (am I thinking of a different old file manger? possibly…? 🤔)

I’ve been toying around with different distros in VMs & find #Dolphin OK enough that I’ve installed it on my actual current-but-soon-to-be-ex #PopOS† install, but it’s from #KDE-land so doesn’t understand #GNOME light / dark mode & consistently blinds me… 🕶️

I’m enjoying #Debian 13 KDE atm, & it seems like it will probably support the old (beast) laptop I’m using for all things Linux

I think I found #Thunar OK when I was playing with an #XFCE install on something recently but really need to revisit it & I’m not sure that it’ll integrate well if I end up running KDE #Wayland rather than… well, XFCE 🤪 (or anything else GNOME-y)

    so frens… what do y’all recommend? 👀

    pls #boost4reach 🙏

^ FFS, stop naming stuff using actual existing words! you’re not helping anyone! 🤪

† a.k.a. “Pop!_OS” but gosh I loathe the way they styled that distro name 🤮

    Ok, then:

    Somehow, that's more threatening. XD

  35. Why bother with #Linux, when there's serviceable, established, free #UNIX, called #Beastie #BSD👹? Linux—that's so 1990s. The 1960s UNIX's where it's at.

OK, I'm just asking for it. Let it rip.

  40. @bamboombibbitybop

No shame in that, although it honestly feels kinda corporate-friendly and objectified, to me.

    Bring real #Beastie back. ;)

They even got rid of Beastie in the FreeBSD Foundation logo. It used to be Beastie in a suit, now it's just some random geometric shape.
