Traffic safety on the Parks Highway is requested for firefighter and public safety. Even though fire activity has decreased, there is still fire danger and heavy equipment working along the highway. Please drive slowly for firefighter and public safety. Pilot cars and/or flaggers with 30-45 minute delays should be expected. 286 personnelDry weather, warmer temperatures, and some mild wind gusts are expected today across the Bear Creek Fire and Saint George Creek Fire. Temperatures will be warmer than average as the week progresses and isolated thunderstorms are likely. A fire weather warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for Wednesday, July 2 for Interior Alaska including the Northern Denali Borough.
Bear Creek Fire. Two new crews arrive today. One will join the two hotshot crews going direct on the northern edge of the fire. The other will join the firefighters working the slop-over on the east side of the Parks Highway, supported by aircraft. Personnel assessed conditions on the southeastern corner of the fire. Fire managers are monitoring heat in the area and using air support until resources can be put on the ground.
As people prepare to return to their homes, please be aware that crews may be working in the area with heavy equipment. Watch for hazards such as ash pits, charred or weakened trees, smoldering debris, and live embers. Avoid damaged or fallen power lines, poles, and downed wires.

2/3Saint George Creek Fire. Mop up continues around structures in the southwest corner of the fire area to ensure remaining heat is extinguished. Crews are also prepping structures just outside the fire perimeter to protect them from potential threat. A new crew is coming in today to relieve the hard-working crew that has been there since the fire began. Assessments are in progress to determine the extent of damage to structures in both fire areas.

Saint George Creek Fire: 20,369 acresThe sunny skies and increased breeze intensified fire behavior yesterday and put up some smoke plumes. Fire behavior remains primarily creeping, smoldering, and single-tree torching. The forecast indicates a good chance of scattered showers with wetting rain today. Southerly winds will switch to the southwest in the evening.
Bear Creek Fire. Bulldozer line is being installed on the north side of the fire to keep the fire from creeping into the agricultural area to the north. Efforts are continuing on the east side to confine the fire west of the Nenana River. On the west side, the fire is burning into a previously burned area and is not likely to spread significantly.
Structure work continues in Bear Creek where crews are mopping up and assessing conditions. Water and retardant drops were made in the Washington Drive/June Creek subdivision area to slow fire activity as crews worked in the area on structure protection. This work is expected to continue for at least 2-3 days, depending on conditions.

Incident Management Team Takes Command of the Bear Creek Fire and Saint George Creek Fire

#SaintGeorgeCreekFire 11,500 acresAs of this morning, the Alaska Complex Incident Management Team 1 has taken command of the Bear Creek Fire (#237) & the Saint George Creek Fire (#246). Additional firefighting crews & other resources are arriving. The Saint George Creek Fire and the Bonnifield Creek Fire (#208) burned together & will be referred to as the Saint George Creek Fire.
Structure protection is a primary concern. On the Bear Creek Fire, a night shift is in place to monitor & continue structure protection efforts. On the Saint George Creek Fire, new crews are arriving to continue protection & mop up of the fire-impacted areas. Assessments are in progress to determine the extent of damage to structures in both fire areas.
On the Bear Creek Fire, bulldozer line is being installed along the northern & eastern edges to confine the fire area to the west side of the Nenana River. The southern edge of the fire will require handline.
A wetting rain fell on the fire area on MON, which has moderated fire behavior and slowed spread. Fire behavior consists primarily of creeping and smoldering in the duff layer & single-tree torching. Recent cloud cover & higher humidity over the next couple days will continue to dampen fire activity & allow firefighters safe access.

Shifting winds push Bear Creek Fire south along the Parks Highway

The Bear Creek Fire (#237) experienced drastic wind shifts on Sunday, June 22nd, that redirected fire activity multiple times throughout the afternoon. Active fire behavior along the Parks Highway has posed a threat to structures and infrastructure in the area, including powerlines and cell towers. The Pioneer Peak Hotshots conducted tactical burning operations for point protection around these values at risk off Bear Creek and Washington Drive throughout the shift on Sunday. Aerial resources have been engaged in slowing fire spread around the perimeter of the fire.
The Bear Creek Fire is active along the Intertie powerline on June 22nd, 2025.
The Parks Highway has been subject to periodic temporary closures between mileposts 259-278, it is open at this time but be prepared for long delays and pilot car operations. Visibility along the highway is poor due to smoke. Firefighters are working in close proximity to the road. An Unmanned Aerial System (UAS/drone) is being utilized to detect spot fires and gather information about structures at risk around the perimeter of the fire.
