  1. It's not just fun stuff that you can do with linux on mobile phones, like testing out experimental kernels or deal with call daemons.

You can also do "boring" stuff like, doing cliché tourism with #gnome #maps on the phone to guide you, take pictures along the way :)

And submit data to #BeaconDB along the way using #geoclue #sutmbler (gitlab.com/kop316/geoclue-stum) by: @kop316

  7. @BryanGreyson I'd forgotten about BeaconDB still don't understand how it works, I couldn't find OpenFoodDB did you mean Open Food Facts? And I love and contribute to OSM

  9. @sri if you rely on WiFi for location, this is more an issue of contributing more to BeaconDB (most distros use BeaconDB nowadays)

  10. I am currently researching at the FSFE for FreeYourAndroid on the topic of microG.

If you use microG, how have you installed it? Or was it already there?

(User app can come from F-Droid repo too)

    ---

  12. 🤔 Oh, what a thrilling tale of #subprojects within subprojects! Matthew bravely embarks on an epic quest to understand something that could have been explained in two sentences. 🦸‍♂️ Meanwhile, #beaconDB trembles under the weight of its own irrelevance. 📡

    1. @beacondb & #Neostumbler

BeaconDB is community-driven wireless geolocation database that serves as a replacement for Mozilla Location Services (MLS), which was discontinued in March 2024.

    why is this project important?

because #Google collects extensive location data tied to user accounts for advertising and profiling (even if you turn off location history) Google doesn't understand consent, what a surprise! :blob_rollingeyes:

BeaconDB will provide privacy friendly geolocation, allowing #degoogled #android ROMs like #CalyxOS and #GrapheneOS to be used without relying on Google (Google's location services)

Neostumbler is an #opensource android app, that collects geolocation data from wireless signals such as Wi-Fi access points, cell towers, and Bluetooth beacons, NS does not collect personal identifying information, only anonymized wireless signal data and it can be turned off at any time. (can't say the same for Google)

you can start contributing to BeaconDB simply by downloading and installing NeoStumbler, enabling GPS, open NS and start a scan, start walking or driving, and after you cross a certain distance, you'll see some generated reports, press upload to upload them all (you can also go to settings and enable automatic uploading in the background)

If you want to volunteer and help us free our phones, laptops and smart watches from corporate ecosystems (like Google's location services) and achieve digital sovereignty in the aspect of geolocation, take a look at these links

  19. Nice to see how well covered Europe is on #beaconDB.

beaconDB is a public domain wireless geolocation database.

You can contribute to @beacondb as well! See the website:

  21. this your irregular reminder that contributing to @beacondb can cost you literally nothing

    1. Install NeoStumbler
    2. Enable passive data collection
    3. Enable automatic report sending over unmetered connections
3.1. (optional) Enable metadata stripping for more privacy
    4. Forget about it

No battery drain, no manual action required
Just use your phone, NeoStumbler will care about contributing

  22. Version 2.8.0 of Geoclue, the freedesktop.org location service was just released! The release highlights are #beacondb support and a separate GeoIP source with new backends. Coming to a #linux computer near you.

  23. ... and speaking of #geolocation, a new release of Geoclue, the Dbus location service for Linux is about to be made. My finger is itching to press the merge button and this can only be prevented if you (yes, You) test the code from git and report bugs!

  24. Yet another, mostly bugfix release of OLS, my local location server. The main attraction is probably native support for m8b-files from wigle.net. Get while it's hot (or not)!

  25. @beacondb, a wireless positioning database and alternative to the now-defunct 🛰️

Even without a direct satellite connection, lets your device figure out its position by triangulating from known networks like WiFi hotspots and cellphone towers 📶

  30. @kop316 @maryjane #GeoclueStumbler is awesome! I used to carry an Android device to collect antennas for #BeaconDB. But soon I will not need to do that any more. Another step towards being fully on #MobileLinux with my #Librem5.

Btw #BeaconDB is also great! My laptop for example usually know pretty precise its locations.

  31. @JasnaPaka contributing to #BeaconDB nowadays feels like #OpenStreetMap in the early days, where one would fill the gaps bit by bit, trying to complete the bigger picture.

Would love to see a data collection service becoming a default option (opt-in) as a background service in one (or more) of the Android ROMs, @postmarketOS etc to increase the user-base far more, than just those that explicitly install and run #NeoStumbler etc

    @beacondb

  32. Whilst enjoying the Glastonbury festival, I recorded network data for @beacondb. Though, given the festival has loads of temporary cell tower masts and Wi-Fi infrastructure, will that skew the data? 🤔 #BeaconDB #LocationServices

  34. Are you already collecting wireless information like wifi points and GSM antennas for #beaconDB?

Building a #bigtech independent database with such information is important for #DigitalSovereignty.

The #MobileLinux eco system already uses beaconDB for determining the position of devices when there is no #GPS.
