  1. It's #EarthDay! 💚 Wondering what you can do locally to protect the Bay?

Throughout #EarthMonth, you can join us for our annual Clean Bay Challenge. As a Clean Bay Challenge volunteer, you'll protect the Bay by picking up trash in the places you already know and love. Baykeeper will provide the tools + tips you need to lead a safe and effective cleanup.

It is a great way for kids, families, and neighbors to make a difference together.

  2. For years I spent weekends picking up butts at beach parks on Maui. I fantasized about dumping them out at a County Council meeting to protest their failure to enforce the "No smoking at the beach" law.

    46 pounds of butts
    10s of thousands of 'em
    off to the landfill

I stopped picking up butts after being traumatized by a County Parks enforcement patrol who informed me in no uncertain terms that it's against the law for citizens to pick up trash at Maui beach parks

  4. Clean Up the Beach in #solidarity with #Heiltsuk Nation

    June 8 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Join RAVEN and #Surfrider for a World Oceans Day beach cleanup, where we’ll be fundraising for Heiltsuk Nation’s legal challenge that aims to protect #marine #ecosystems from coast to coast to coast.

This year, we’re choosing to engage in #community reciprocity not just for our own local #watersheds, but as an act of solidarity with Heiltsuk Nation, whose own beach cleanup — following the Nathan E. Stewart spill — is so much more complex.

So, come out to #CloverPoint in Victoria on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 11am-1pm for a community-powered beach cleanup. Together we are aiming to fundraise $2,000 for Heiltsuk’s legal challenge on #WorldOceansDay.

  6. #CoastalCleanupDay is right around the corner - this Saturday, 9/21!

Join this global effort to clear shorelines & beaches of trash pollution 🧹

Our cleanup event is full but there are plenty of other cleanups around the #BayArea looking for volunteers -- see map below from the CA Coastal Commission:

  7. Something I stumbled across that is making me feel better about the world:

The Flipflopi Project, which has built the first ever sailing dhow made from recycled plastic, which was at the time probably the biggest item made from recycled plastic at 9m long. Now they are almost done with the second boat, which is 24m long.

    This project:
    - pays locals to collect plastic waste from beaches, out of sensitive and CO2-storing mangrove forests and from households
    - uses this waste and recycles it to make new materials for the boats
    - experiments with using solar cookers to heat up plastic for processing
    - is saving trees from having to be cut down for the boats
    - works with traditional dhow builders, keeping this craft alive
    - teaches students about the different stages of the project, how to sort, recycle, use plastic as well as weaving, carpentry (with wood and plastic), metalwork, traditional and high-tech machines and boat building
    - sailed along the coast of east Africa and around Lake Victoria, connecting communities around the region
    - raises awareness about plastic pollution, recycling, and spreads joy

  9. Another trip to Newbiggin with Sea Shepherd UK, another big haul of marine debris: about twenty bags, tyres, and a whole load of industrial piping and ghostnet and just…stuff.

  10. Just back from a beach clean up at Fox River near Parrsboro. Having a warm drink before I think about food. We collected a lot of nylon rope, styrofoam and bits of plastic. 4 women, 6 bags of trash in about 1.5 hours. It was breezy and cold out there, but we had a great view of Cape Split #litter #beachCleanup

  11. G’day, here’s the #introduction. I’m a #writer and #editor and produce/#film content for an #arts broadcast over on some other platforms (@POPSART).
    Also #MPhil at #QUT #DMRC (#communication, #media, #climatechange, #misinformation, #platforms).

    Feel like I’m overdoing the #hashtags here but I’m guessing that’s how this place rolls. #genX and #feminist #motherofboys. I dig the #environment and #ocean conservation… a #beachcleanup nerd.

  12. Every time I go to a beach, I pick up rubbish – mostly plastic. Yes, you read that right: I take a rubbish bag and a pair of these barbecue forceps with me and start pulling toothbrushes, plastic bottles and tampons out of the sand while I walk along the beach. And fragments of fishnets. Yes, it is not only a rumour: Most of the ocean waste is fishnets. So, we should really really also think of stopping eating fish to save fish.

This happens on the most hidden beaches – the plastic lands in the ocean, and the waves wash it ashore. This picture was taken on a beach in Denmark some days ago. I didn't only find plastic that day, but also four dead gannets and a shark-sized fish I couldn't identify any more – with plastic in their stomach.

So please: Whenever you come to a beach: Leave it a bit cleaner when you go. Thank you!
