Pet peeve: progress bars that aren't actually measuring any progress - they just fill the line, slowing down as they go in the hope that whatever operation is waiting to complete can happen before it runs out of fake "progress".

It's really just a spinny beachball in a trenchcoat, and it's annoying as heck.

Does your Safari beachball when you’re using the address bar, or periodically as you’re working (at least on macOS Sequoia)?

Check the size of your reading list.

Mine had 14,489 items going all the way back to 2017. Turns out, the first time you focus the address bar after launching Safari, it fires off a preview image download for *every single item in your reading list*. Yes, you read that right. Trillion-dollar corporation, ladies and gentlemen. Brightest minds, folding phones, golden awards to dictators, Just Works™ and all that…

Anyway, so my Safari fires off 12,429 requests to 3,775 hosts in roughly 3 seconds. The images aren’t cached (yep), so it happens again on every launch. And where does all the processing happen? Did you say “the main thread?” Congratulations! Hence the beachball.

So that’s Bug #1.

I’d basically stopped using Safari because of it until, finally, this morning (I’ve wasted a whole morning on this), I decided to bite the bullet and debug it. (Because I’m clearly an idiot that loves to do free work for trillion-dollar corporations.)

Anyway, the quick solution is to backup your bookmarks and delete your reading list.¹

Problem solved.

Or so you’d think.

Because if you do that, chances are you’re going to find in a few minutes that your reading list has synced back after you delete it. (Tril-, oh fuck it, you get the idea.)

Turns out, when you select Clear All from the reading list sidebar, it empties the bookmarks file without updating the iCloud sync state.

That’s Bug #2.

So to work around Bug #1, we need to work around Bug #2.

So maybe we select reading list items in batches and delete them? Not ideal, but workable, right? Nope… you can’t multiple select in the reading list sidebar.

Maybe if I ran Clear All from my iPhone? Nope, no Clear All on Safari on iPhone.

Well, I guess it’s clear what I need to do, then: press the delete key 14,489 times to delete all items from my reading list one at a time – simples! (Folks, watch out, AGI is right around the corner. These motherfuckers are not messing around.)

So, anyway, I wrote some AppleScript to delete them one by one. It’s still running. Will report back if it works and they don’t come back again.

But, hey, at least we have folding phones!

¹ Am I ever going to read anything on there? Probably not. I’d only ever opened 113 of the 14,489 articles I’d saved. Make of that what you will :)

Retro SciFi Film of the Week…

Dark Star (1974)

This started out as a college film, which was actually pretty good quality for a college film, but then some movie exec found out about it and got the rights to it and added a bunch of material to bring it up to a feature length film. Then a distributor got hold of it and put it in theaters. So, it was it was a nice college film but a really lousy commercial release.

Here are some sample clips from the film which illustrate the pacing problems that the film has. Apparently the college version was even slower paced than this theatrical release. It got released on VHS about a decade later and actually had quite a few sales/rentals and now people are calling it a cult classic.

It's funny to watch with a lot of geek humor, if you’ve got the time.

Un terremoto se produce al deslizarse un bloque sobre otro, mediante un plano (falla). La parte "delantera" del bloque, comprime. la "trasera", se estira. Cada uno de esos dos sectores (cuatro, dos por bloque) libera energía elástica de un modo característico, y es lo que ilustra el diagrama.

Así sabemos qué tipo de falla puede ser.
