So what’s the solution?
The province and feds need to do their jobs and fund municipal infrastructure and services through the much more broad and fair taxation tools that are available to them so that it doesn’t hit low and middle income people as hard.
They need to spread that taxation onto industrial and corporate entities which used to provide a huge proportion of the tax revenue to small cities and towns through property tax but have now disappeared.

As a former city councillor, without even reading the editorial I can tell you the answer:
This is not about “runaway municipal spending”. This is deferred maintenance, aging infrastructure, and senior government financial downloading of all manner of services.
The logical endpoint of decades of this, across Canada, coupled with an antiquated and unfair property tax system, is stuff like Calgary’s massive emergency water main repairs causing huge disruption.

The bureaucratic waste generated by inter-municipal governance "situations" in this province is really insane.
eg.
Langley Town and City
North Cowichan Municipality and City of Duncan
Beaver Creek, Cherry Creek, Sproat Lake districts and Port Alberni City
The various Victoria municipalities and their squabbles. The province should just amalgamate them…
Years wasted. Millions of dollars.

UBCM conference of local elected officialsIt felt like the right time to sent out some mass emails promoting SocialBC amongst our provincial elect-eds!
We'll see if we get any bites. We have the Town of Gibsons @TownofGibsons and Esquimalt @EsquimaltBC and MLAs Botterill @mlabotterell and Osborne @josie_osborne now to "prime the pump".
Who knows when it might catch :)

One of the main reasons I got into municipal politics in 2014 was because it seemed all city business in #portAlberni city council was happening “in-camera" (which means a meeting, not in public).
I'm glad the integrity commissioner has ruled against Ken Sim and his ABC Party councillors. It's not complicated. The Vancouver Charter is not different from the Community Charter used by every other municipality in BC. You can't have quorum and discuss business outside a public meeting. Period.
""If Council Members meet with quorum outside of an open meeting, discuss City business, and do so in a way that moves that business along the spectrum of decision making in a material way, there is a problem — they are depriving the public of participation in the policy development and decision-making processes that serve to build public trust and
confidence in local government," Southern wrote."Democracy is undermined.””

A message to attendees at the conference of the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC).
It’s time to stop using American, corporate controlled, social media services that are working hand in hand with the US Government to threaten our economy and sovereignty.

I am so over our local politicians bickering and passing the buck!
It is a travesty that our Visitor Centre is closed over Spring Break because the City decided it was going to pick this moment to try to get the Regional District to take on the cost.

Achievement unlocked! Emailed the offices of the #BCNDP #BCCP #BCGreens and every elected MLA. A similar message as last week's to Municipal leaders/staff.
Tweaked the message to emphasize the "BC Made" element in this time of a trade war with the USA.
Bluesky isn't it.
It's a time when people are going to look for locally grown solutions. That includes Social Media!
#Mastodon and the #Fediverse are the *only* places with Canadian options!

Sigh.
The protest candidate won…. By a handful of votes.
Less than 600 votes won the election.
Turnout was under 10%.
So many problems in the world, but cynicism, apathy and disengagement have to be right up there!

A former Mayor, current Councillor, and a really really good, caring, person who I feel grateful to have known and seen as a mentor, passed away suddenly today.
RIP John.
Very sad about it. Too young. He was a paramedic by trade, but spent many of the past years helping the most vulnerable people in #PortAlberni while also on Council.
Sigh. 😢

Been a minute since I was in City Hall Chambers. It's a Committe of the Whole meeting. Always good to hear public asking questions of local government and local governrnent responding.

This is so sad. Helen was a character. A riot. A good person and politician. She was kind, and funny, and not a little odd, and always surprising.
I have never met anyone like her and I can't imagine I ever will again. My only regret is that we had to compete for a spot on City Council and didn't get the chance to work together.
I kept an amazing bottle of Tequila that she bought me for my birthday. I guess that becomes my personal memento from her. That and lots of memories and the impact she had on our City as councillor. Her house in #PortAlberni is only a few blocks away from me.
I guess the only consolation is she likely died doing what was her passion, seeing the world and the finer side of life, and driving unique cars.
RIP Helen.

Proud of my little city and its Council today.
“Port Alberni councillor Dustin Dame signed an open letter to the Canadian government earlier this year calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Dame, who was acting as mayor on Dec. 11, spoke in favour of the motion. “This is one of those situations where our voice feels small, but we have a voice nonetheless,” he said.Councillor Debbie Haggard, who was moved to tears by the presentation, said the situation in Gaza is a “complicated issue” and also voted to support the motion.
Councillor Todd Patola, however, didn’t mince words in calling the situation a genocide.
“I stand for pacifism, and I stand against genocide,” he said before supporting the motion.”

I was just reminded that the Province of British Columbia's latest (2018) guidelines to Cities for building in areas impacted by sea level rise are literally "underwater" by 2200. They plan for 1.0m rise by 2100 and 2.0 by 2200 but as you can see in their chart, the median for 2200 is closer to 2.3m. Do we need to talk about "systemic optimism/delusion”?
