Old growth trees being transported on #bchwy19 near #Nanaimo this morning.
I would guess this is just one tree, likely transported by several truck loads. Looks like a western red cedar, about 200-300 years old.
They are still logging these in previously reserved areas along the Alberni Inlet (Nahmint) and on the North Island. 😢
These were in 8-10ft chunks on the truck. Not sure what their destination would be. Possibly chipoing for pulp/paper or 🤷♂️
A total open fire ban starts today which usually means the forests shut down.
Not sure if that is the case, as the fire danger is not extreme but any reason to stop cutting these elders would be worth it.

Got to walk across an empty Highway 19 on a green light in the opposite direction. 😂 🚦
The entire highway is closed between the south Nanaimo interchange and Northfield Road. (about 10km).
All due to a big accident apparently earlier this morning. Thankfully, I usually park across the highway at what is known as the cheap seats lol
So I took the back road/detour. Ended up delayed about 30 minutes.

Quite a bit of snow in the mix on the radar around Central VI. If you are driving today take care on the mountain passes. You might see some rain/snow mix particularly heavy rain could turn quickly to wet snow.

Interesting drive in this morning. There are already warmer patches of air in different places along the route from #PortAlberni to Nanaimo. -7 in Port and on the Hump, but only -1 at Cameron Lake. Then back down to -5 in #Qualicum and -7 in Nanoose and #Nanaimo.
We'll see how this all plays out tomorrow night as the Pacific moisture comes back in.

When there is chaos on the highways and they are all closed, maybe a true alternative is needed? 🚆 🚂

Good grief. I have never seen a plume like that on Central Vancouver Island for a few years. And never in the first week of June. Taken from Nanoose Chevron #BCHwy19
