"Fire entered neighbourhoods almost exclusively via embers, rather than direct flame contact, quickly shifting from a wildfire to several urban fires burning simultaneously."

This tells me it is crucial to evacuate *before* embers arrive in your neighborhood. If you wait until embers are falling then fires may have started along your escape route.
