  1. This will be a series of posts sharing a quote from a pioneer of electronic music with a reference to read and, where applicable, an episode to listen to from my podcast “Talk To The Chip" on the subject with Jono Podmore , featuring a piece from that pioneer. I don’t intend to spam or broadcast, and I’m not a regular content creator. It can hopefully be informative and inspiring for fellow members in our dearest tldr.nettime instance, and broader fediverse, especially lurkers and my friends who love sound.

Quotes from pioneering composers of electronic music

Quote 1: Let’s start with the great Daphne Oram: “You take a sound, any sound, record it and then change its nature by a multiplicity of operations”…."You record it at different speeds; you play it backwards; you add it to itself over and over again. You adjust filters, echoes, acoustic qualities…you produce a vast and subtle symphony. It’s a sort of modern magic. We think there’s something in it. Some musicians believe it may become an art form in its own right….” (Oram, from a 1957 BBC production ableton.com/en/blog/studio-as-)

  2. BBC: Creating the Doctor Who Theme

no real-time instruments were harmed in the making of this iconic theme. Just a few miles of quarter-inch one-track tape, scissors and scotch-tape, and anything else they could get their hands on.

  4. youtube.com/watch?v=Wx9yAnXdVo Sitting here watching the #DoctorWho episode ‘The Sea Devils’ and the #BBCRadiophonicWorkshop presents a whole lot to like. So many moods perfectly represented by some wild synth squiggles, bounces and textures. #RadioFreeSkaro

  5. Before "Close (To The Edit)" by Art Of Noise there was another song with a car starting: youtube.com/watch?v=Prw6Rd6oNt "Know Your Car (Get out and Get Under)" by BBC Radiophonic Workshop

  6. Mr. G presents techno via a core of musique concrete, enhanced by bubbling vintage synth sounds. Sound that has a classic #BBCRadiophonicWorkshop feel making for a recording with vibe all its own. One of my favorites of 2023 thus far. childhood.bandcamp.com/album/c

After the unsurpassable #DeliaDerbyshire, he did my fave arrangement of the theme.

Also, I want a synthier, more Radiophonic Who in general. It's all a bit too orchestral now and misses out on that spookiness.
