"Bayview has changed. Once one of the last remaining Black neighborhoods in San Francisco and a relatively affordable place, it is now more Asian and Latino than Black. It remains one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city, beset by radiation at the old Navy shipyard, poorly served by transit, and often ignored by the rest of the city.
Residents love it though — it’s home. The weather is superior here, they say, families are plentiful, and neighbors are welcoming. People drive too fast and the city could increase services, they say, but it’s diverse and working-class, and that keeps it stable."

"The San Francisco Public Press presents the first half of a two-part radio documentary, '#Exposed,' opening a window into the little-known history of the #HuntersPointNavalShipyard. The sprawling abandoned naval base, in #SanFrancisco’s southeast waterfront #Bayview neighborhood, is currently the site of the city’s largest real estate development project. The base played a key role in the Cold War nuclear era, when it housed a research institution known as the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory [#NRDL], which studied the human health effects of #radiation.
"In Episode 1 of the podcast, we trace the radioactive contamination found in the shipyard soil today back to its origins, with #NuclearBomb testing in the #MarshallIslands. We also hear from #EnvironmentalJustice advocates, including one who led a health biomonitoring survey revealing that nearby residents have toxic elements stored in body tissues that match the hazardous chemicals of concern identified at the shipyard.

Supervisors voted unanimously yesterday to oppose the planned closure of a Bayview RV site that has housed hundreds of homeless people over the last three years.
It's unclear, however, if that will sway the homeless dept, which reports to the mayor.

Bayview residents gathered on Thursday for a memorial to mourn Justice Alma Anthony, 5, and Paragon Maya Anthony, 1, who were killed two days before Christmas.
The community sang and prayed together while taking the opportunity to discuss mental health resources.
