The Bayeux Tapestry in London: ‘A diplomatic operation that almost never happened’.
Nearly 1000 years after chronicling the Norman conquest of England, the Bayeux Tapestry is making history once again.
The fragile 11th-century embroidery has arrived in London on an unprecedented loan to the British Museum, prompting delight and concern in equal measure.

http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/76552"Yesterday, over 18 painstaking hours, teams of French and British conservators and British Museum staff unfurled the 70-metre long artwork from the folding stand where it had been concertinaed, surrounded by protective mattress-type padding."

A 70-metre-long medieval masterpiece deserves a pretty spectacular welcome 🎉
So the British Museum projected a 200-metre-long "thank you" onto the White Cliffs of Dover 📽️
Here's a behind-the-scenes look at projecting the Bayeux Tapestry onto Shakespeare Cliff to celebrate its once-in-a-millennium loan to the British Museum 📜🏛️

So yesterday the Bayeux tapestry was transported, and because of the chatter about it I learned a couple of things. The best being that there exists a replica in Reading. https://www.readingmuseum.org.uk/blog/breaking-bayeux-code-fine-details-britains-bayeux-tapestry so all you Brits, skip the lines and stroll at leisure.
Second I had forgotten all about it, but online you can zoom in and explore also at your liesure:

Third is the most funny bit and is about penises. The replica in Reading, being sown by Victorian women has the human penises neatly covered by pants.

The medieval Bayeux Tapestry arrived in London early on Friday, after nearly 1000 years.
The tapestry is on loan from France for a year and will be exhibited at the British Museum.
Its journey has been surrounded by secrecy due to security concerns.

I only half-heard German news. Apparently, France has lent the British an old carpet.
OMG, have Brexit and politics made things in the UK that much worse? That they have to borrow old carpets? It was about the Bayeux Tapestry. 🤣
In German, the word 'Teppich' can be used for tapestry as well as for a thinned out old carpet that you use for transporting a corpse. But the news speaker could have talked about a 'Wandteppich' if only he knew. 🤓 -

There is a rich irony in the British Museum celebrating the (temporary) return of an important historical artefact, to Britain, from the foreign home where it has been housed and displayed for a millennium. Soak it in.

Britain's Bayeux Tapestry -
When I was a kid my parents decided to make a detour on one of our holidays to see the #BayeuxTapestry…
It was in a very long and dimly lit tunnel of a room as I recall.
My brother and I just looked for people with arrows in their eye or up their bums…
There was also hardly anyone there. It’s like my childhood memories of Durdle Door. The time before these things were ‘discovered’.
