  1. Bayard Rustin organized the 1963 March on Washington from the shadows a homophobic era forced him into. Ran the whole thing. Stood offstage.

Sylvia Rivera fought to keep the "T" from being cut out of the movement — the exact sorting we watched again today. The thread doesn't break.

Who wrote you into the record before you could?

  2. Eight percent is all that stands behind the Florida candidate booking a Hitler apologist this Saturday. Eight. That's not a movement. It's a fever breaking. Free every morning → twp.ai/4hrqvA

  3. Troublemaking isn't the opposite of grace. It's grace with its sleeves rolled up. The architects of erasure are getting erased at the ballot box this week — the Pride-flag-ban author lost his primary. The room is emptying out.

  4. Bayard Rustin organized the largest demonstration the country had ever seen — and was arrested for who he loved, pushed to the back of his own movement for it, and built the thing that changed history anyway.

"We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers."

  5. He had organized the largest nonviolent demonstration in American history. He had taught Martin Luther King Jr. everything King knew about Gandhi.
And most Americans had never heard his name.

  6. #BayardRustin was a civil rights activist and political strategist who is perhaps best known for his role as the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and was a close advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Despite his contributions, Rustin faced significant challenges, partly due to his identity as an openly gay man during a period of widespread homophobia. Rustin shared some of those challenges in this interview in 1982. #BlackHistory

  7. @NBCNews
"Social justice advocates are creating a queer history archive that celebrates Bayard Rustin, a major organizer in the Civil Rights Movement and key architect of the March on Washington.

"The Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice will launch a digital archive this fall featuring articles, photos, videos, telegrams, speeches, and more tied to Rustin's work. Sourced from museums, archives, and personal accounts, it's designed as a central space where others can add their own stories, creating a living historical record.

"There's this hole in our history," said Robt Martin Seda-Schreiber, the center's founder and chief activist. "And there are great resources about Bayard, but they're all spread out, and none of it has been collected and put together in the way that he deserves, and more importantly, the way the world deserves to see him."

  8. From organizing the March on Washington to championing civil & LGBTQ+ rights, Bayard Rustin's brilliance shaped history - yet his story was often overlooked. Today, we celebrate his courage, his impact, and his unwavering commitment to equality. #LGBTQ #BayardRustin #CivilRights #UnsungHero #Pride #PrideMonth

  9. Who else have we erased?
This isn’t just a story about a movement. It’s about who gets remembered, who gets left out, and what it means to love when there is no name for what you are to each other.

  10. Bayard Rustin:
“Let us be enraged about injustice, but let us not be destroyed by it.“

“We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers.”

On this Martin Luther King’s Day let us all be angelic troublemakers makers. remembering Bayard Rustin’s kind wise words.

Bunch of people like this. Giants. Assaulted relentlessly by bigots. People playing hard for the team, by which I mean the human race. Somehow they got eaten up and spit out.

Bayard Rustin comes to mind. Harvey Milk. Their lives were devoted to SERVICE to the best of humanity and the society they lived in. Which shat on them.

They're very important for all of us to celebrate and remember, not just #LGBTQ.

#BayardRustin a gay man who worked with Dr King during the height of the civil rights era and was the lead organizer of the March on Washington he's a fascinating man.

  15. For my Historical Research and Writing class, we started this week with a reading about #Religion and the earlier, longer history of the #CivilRights movement via Howard Thurman, #BayardRustin, Pauli Ann Murray, and others.

The students enjoyed it, and we have #MLKday off, so I recommended Dowd Hall's classic "Long Civil Rights Movement" article for a timely weekend read, perhaps paired with *Rustin* on Netflix. That's on my agenda anyway.

I'm re-reading the Dowd Hall article now and it is *still* so relevant. If you have not read it in a while, do so soon!

As #civilrights #activist #BayardRustin, #ColmanDomingo gives one of the best performances of the year! The #film's story telling is not as strong however.

  17. Bayard Rustin was one of the primary organizers of the 1963 March on Washington. But since he was African American and gay, people like the Hitler-quoting women in Moms for Liberty would just as soon as not have any mention of him (or, likely, the march as well) in libraries and history class.

  19. @DeliaChristina

My guess is that he would support Israel's right to defend itself against a group who aim to exterminate Jews in lynching style massacres, but that he would also be working hard to facilitate a two state solution, so that a sovereign Palestine can live alongside Israel in peace and dignity.

Justice does not require that either side exterminate the other, either as individuals or as national entities.

I would also guess that he would look back at the past twenty years and be pained to the depths of his soul by both the Israeli ultraright thugs and the Palestinian Islamist terrorists who together have undermined the Oslo peace process.

Hope you have more mimosa lubricated Global Events brunches with your bestie, and hope too that neither of you are afraid to think afresh and change your mind.
