The last part of the #Battlespire write-up is surprisingly poignant. He's talking here about the manual:
"you can’t deny this is a passionate and meaningful expression of who the developers are and what they want out of gaming. Your mind’s eye dilates when you read it. You take in the pizza boxes ... the blobby pewter barbarians rendered by people who didn’t have an internet to teach them how to thin their paints or work with washes.

"Now, there IS a way to defeat these guys: you find an optional, hidden codeword near the end of the level that banishes them. Alternately, you can get rid of all of them at once by uninstalling Battlespire and chewing the CD to splinters, a strategy I believe recommended by the official Prima booklet."

Fin des années 90, #Bethesda est à un tournant : continuer à faire des jeux comme #Arena et #Daggerfall ou tenter une nouvelle formule ? Deux projets sont lancés, le classique #Battlespire par Julian LeFay, lead sur TES 1&2, et le jeu d'action/aventure #Redguard par un jeune Todd Howard, qui refonde en passant le lore de la série. Ce dernier convainc : LeFay quitte Bethesda tandis qu'Howard se voit confier le dev de #Morrowind, qui devra au moins autant à Redguard qu'aux premiers #ElderScrolls.

J'ai le souvenir assez net d'avoir acheté la #bigbox de #ElderScrolls #Battlespire dans une boutique de #jeuxvidéo (qui n'existe plus) près de la galerie commerciale (qui n'existait pas encore) Les Champs à #SaintBrieuc, mais le ticket de caisse que j'ai retrouvé dans la boîte me fait douter. J'ai toujours trouvé l'illu hyper classe et le jeu, découvert dans #Joystick, intrigant. Mais en fait c'était un #Daggerfall débarrassé de tout ce qui en faisait l'intérêt, donc bof.
