  4. Telstra are shutting down their 3G service soon… and as it happens, they lied to me when they sold me what I thought was a 4G phone: what they sold me (ZTE T83) is a 4G modem with a 3G phone.

    So next year, I have to move to something that supports VoLTE. Not wanting to spend money and possibly be lied to again, and also not liking what's on the market anyway… I decided I'd get this old T85 going.

    This is two models up from my present phone. It runs Android 7, which yes, is old… but crucially, the phone supports VoLTE, as well as offering all the hardware features my existing phone has.

    The patient is shown here, along with some of the tools and the replacement battery.

    Really, you want a screwdriver set that has Torx screws for the 4 back cover screws, but a 2.4mm flat blade managed to do the job.

    The battery is a proprietary affair, so you'll need to look for a battery specifically for a ZTE T85. PolarTech will sell you one for under $50 including shipping.

    If it's a Pro, you might also want to check if its battery is part of the recall programme due to overheating issues: support.apple.com/15-inch-macb

    I looked at the #iFixIt guides, and looks like the process is a lot more involved than for my 2009 model... ifixit.com/Guide/Retina+MacBoo

    IMHO #batteryReplacement should be one of the most accessible tasks, but it's not surprising that many companies, Apple especially, is making it harder rather than easier...
