  1. After harsh winter, #Ukrainians find joy in releasing #bats rescued from war 🦇

    By Derek Gatopoulos

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — "As night falls over a nature park on the edge of #Kyiv, children crowd around volunteers who carefully open cloth bags and release bats into the twilight.

"As each one takes flight, snapping through the air, more than 1,000 spectators cheer and applaud — families, off-duty soldiers, and bat enthusiasts, a few dressed in #Goth outfits.

"Hundreds of bats, many rescued from war-torn areas in the east of the country, were released late Saturday at one of multiple events around Ukraine planned to coincide with the arrival of spring.

" 'This is important for us as an organization because these are on a red list of endangered animals. Preserving them is very important,' said Anastasiia Vovk, a volunteer at the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center, which organized the release.

"All 28 bat species in Ukraine are listed as protected animals due to declining populations."

  5. He was extremely underweight but thankfully appeared uninjured. The only problem was, he refused to fly. After a week, I thought it best to have him x-rayed. Thankfully, no hidden injuries — so home we came. The good news is that in the safety of a soft puppy playpen, the last few nights he's tried to fly to the mesh playpen wall. We still have a way to go, but it’s a step in the right direction. Fingers crossed for him.

Happy New Year! 2023 is here!
Bats are still hibernating, which is a state of inactivity characterised by lower body temperature, slower breathing, and lower metabolic rate. They will slowly start waking up in Spring when temperatures increase and insects are around.

  7. @JaneAgain Thank you Jane. It was a sad day for sure - and it never gets any easier. Saying that though, receiving such kind +supportive messages from all you lovely folk here, helps more than you'll ever know..and I thank you for that. Am just sorry I couldn't help Bertie get better.

On a brighter note, Sydney Pip is now self-feeding. Yay! And it's my birthday. She has taken her time for sure 😅 but we got there. ❤️ She has given me the gift of time 😉A special birthday pressie #Bats #BatRescue

  8. A cheeky little bat.

Many moons ago I had 5 bat pups to care for over the winter period. They were too young to be released. After a few months, they were old enough to sleep in a bat box and I managed to take a photo as one of them peeped out. I thought he looked cute and the photo inspired me to make a Christmassy image and message.

The following spring the little bats were released and flew free. 🦇 💚 🦇 🌲 ❄️ ☃️
