I said it when discussing the first volume, but this is so aggressively 90s.

It's an interesting story, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends. I don't remember much of this part of the story from when I was a kid. I remembered the fall of Batman, but not much about the rise of Azrael-Batman.

The juxtaposition of what we know classic Batman does when he interacts with villains vs Valley is what makes this work. Catwoman says it best when he calls Valley "sterile." He's a nearly emotionless monster who believes in his own sense of violent justice, at all costs.

It's why he changes the costume. It's why he added claws to his gauntlets. It's why he kicks out Robin and locks him out of the Bat-cave. It's why he was the wrong person to take on the mantle of the Bat.

He's no Bruce Wayne.

His interactions with Catwoman are probably some of the best. She's trying to steal some chemicals that were planned for use by capitalist to destroy an entire ecosystem so they can build on it. Valley views it merely as theft and has a hard time seeing where she lives in the grey areas. She constantly outsmarts him and his internal dialogue about how he's suppressing his lust for her are just...wild to say the least.

The volume ends with Wayne fully recovered, skipping the comics where this happened. And now he's ready to take on Valley and reclaim the mantle.

New Comic Read - Batman: Knightfall, Omnibus Volume 2

For those who don't know, Knightfall was a long story arc from the early 90s which began when Bane decided to try to break the Batman by releasing all the convicts from within Arkham at once. When he was weakest after all this, Bane broke into his home and broke his back.

This is volume two in the aftermath of these activities where Jean-Paul Valley, who had been working alongside Batman as Azrael, had been hand selected to take on the mantle of the bat while Bruce Wayne recovers.

This version of the omnibus includes none of Bruce Wayne's recovery, and focuses entirely on Valley as Batman. And he's brutal.

As the volume progresses, we see more about Valley who had been brainwashed as a child to be an assassin to serve The Order of Saint Dumas, a fictional spinoff of the Knights Templar that exist into modern day and believe in a brutal attempt to create order out of the world.

His "programming" kicks in from time to time and he nearly beats various Batman villains to death.
