  1. Because my birthday falls on Bastille Day I made ham and zucchini buckwheat crêpes topped with Béchamel and paired with a nice Vouvray. Afterwards I opened all the presents that I'd purchased for myself, then practiced my French for the day. #BastilleDay #birthday #french #crepes #food #cooking #wine #alcohol #vouvray

  6. Poor Mellie was hiding in the bathroom and I put some towels on her to calm her down during the #July14 ( #BastilleDay) #Fireworks.

Poor thing was shaking and terrified.

  7. I am not usually patriotic but in the grand scheme of things, I think #France is not doing so bad, as a country. French people do not necessarily realise how advanced we are on social topics and how precious these things are (e.g. education, healthcare, pension system, etc.).
Of course, a lot more could be done for a fairer distribution of wealth and a much stronger approach on ecological topics.

    Anyway: Happy #BastilleDay!

    Enfin bref: Joyeux 14 Juillet!

  8. #Onthisday in 1789, the Bastille was stormed in Paris, a key turning point of the French Revolution. 3.5 years later Louis XVI was executed by guillotine. We look at the deluge of prints that emerged depicting his death publicdomainreview.org/collect #FeteNationale #bastilleday #otd

  9. Gisèle Pelicot is awarded France's highest civilian honour.

Pelicot, the French woman whose courage in publicly testifying about sexual abuse she endured made her a symbol of women's rights in France, has received the country's highest civilian honour.

Pelicot's landmark case led to reforms in France's rape laws after she bravely testified about enduring a decade of sexual abuse.

  15. As today is #BastilleDay , I've put together a series of perspectives on the French Revolution from a working-class postion. Here's Rosa Luxemburg's view on how the French Revolution. She shows that failure of the bourgeois class to realise its own aims, such as economic equality, led to conflict with its erstwhile allies, the propertyless and poor classes of France (a proto-proletariat).

  20. 🇫🇷 Bastille Day 🇫🇷 or Fête Nationale, commemorates the day in 1789 when the people charged into Paris’ Bastille, during the French Revolution. The first celebration happened July 14, 1790 - one year later.

Originally constructed as a medieval fortress, the Bastille was eventually used as a state prison, holding political prisoners who spoke against the laws set by the king.
