Three weeks in Tallahassee. I am still coming down from a depression and anxiety low and high.
It been very dry. The TLH are is about 12" short on annual rainfall. Of course that could be erased by one tropical storm. No rain for the upcoming week and highs in the low 80's. A good guilt free sleep would be a blessing.

I've always been a sucker for all the paraphernalia that bogs down the sport. Even as a boy the fishermen I admired weren't necessarily the ones who caught the most fish but the ones with the biggest and best stocked tackle boxes-tray after tray of brightly colored plugs and stylized scales or frog spots and the blankly staring eyes of cartoon characters.

My Sunday afternoon didn't suck, despite the temperature plunging almost 30 degrees Fahrenheit from the previous day to yesterday. I hosted a fellow US armed forces vet on the boat. Together, we got two bass and two nice-sized sunfish. Great day!

Years ago, I was buying a non-resident fishing license online when my son called to tell me he was moving to Washington State. Totally unexpected.
Weeks later, back in the Midwest, a DNR guy asked how fishing was (great) & could he see my license (yes). Hmm, didn't have it with me. DNR guy says he can see on his phone I bought previous years not that year.
$225 later I was reminded to stay focused and always have a current license.

When it comes down to just fishing, it hardly matters whether you are using this year's model graphite with the hottest new line on the market or a 40 year old bamboo with the one line that hasn't changed in 60 years. Nine times out of 10 new gear isn't the solution to a fishing problem.

Darren is studying for a degree in psychiatry-looking to "do something with his life" as my father would say-but the summer job would be good training. Guides get used to seeing raw emotions and exposed insecurities. And really, the only thing a psychiatrist can do that a good guide can do is write prescriptions.

When you don't catch a fish, it's rare for it to be the fault of your tackle, your fishing partner, and the weather is just the weather. Same goes for the river and the fish themselves which after all don't owe you anything.

There are some poor fishing guides, but as long as he gets you to the water (as long as you know how to fish) I doubt the devil himself could keep you from catching a fish or two when the fishing is good. When the fishing is bad, the best guide in the world can't do much about it.
The fact is, most blank days are the ones for one reason or another you shouldn't have gone fishing in the first place if all you wanted to do was catch something.

I try to be mindful of my motivation when I go off alone. I mean if you are weary, sick but still ambulatory, fed up, overworked, heartbroken, need to think things over or stop thinking things over for awhile, you should definitely go fishing, and you should probably go alone so you don't bother anyone. But then fishing like most other simple human pleasures, is better done out of love, than when used as a painkiller.

It's not likely for a solitary trip to end in a great epiphany or anything, it's just that I think the way when you fish alone is the way you really fish: your own personal style, uninfluenced by crowds, guides, or friends, and it's interesting to plug back into that now and again. Solitude is educational and it can be satisfying. For instance, I have lived half my adult life by myself and found myself to be decent company.

I think I see more when I am alone, although again I don't know if that's an accurate recollection or not. It seems like there is more scenery, weather, wildlife and birdsong in my head at the end of a solitary day, but maybe that's because that's just because that space isn't filled up with conversation and other people's fish. My memory isn't exactly poor, but it does seem like I have limited capacity.

I'd grown up eating bluegills, I liked them, and more to the point, I knew how to catch and cook them. Trout were a real challenge to me (still are), and catching them wasn't a forgone conclusion, but under the right conditions catching bluegills was like picking raspberries; all you had to know was where they were and when they were ripe.

At the end of a good season, I'll have fishing licenses from four or five states and a couple of Canadaian provinces, some worn-out fly lines, near empty fly boxes, a born-again thriftyness, and a good tan. But then on one of those cold solitary late-November walks, I'll get to thinking about that one beaver pond I never made it to and think, What the hell did I do all year, sit on my ass?

You can go to your fishing journal to prove things like the year, the month, the weather, the hatches, the name of the guide, and the weight of a big fish if someone thought to bring along a scale. But if you are like me, the things that stick aren't written down. And memory is flawed. Fishermen know that better than anyone, we just don't always know how much.

Four seasons have never been enough to adequately describe the weather here or anywhere else for that matter. There should be at least a dozen, and they should designate the unstable edges where one set of conditions shade into the next, because those are the most interesting. The whole idea of seasons would be more useful if they'd been named by fishermen instead of astronomers.

I never planned on living in Florida but in looks like that is what we see coming in the next year. Our Tallahassee daughter will keep an eye on us.
Downside: No good hot dogs, Italian beef, and suspect pizza.
Upside: New water to fish with a grandson, new photography subjects, and more time with my wife.
