I've been working on a modification of the #YearZeroEngine from #FreeLeaguePublishing to turn it into the engine for my own #TTRPG, which I've been developing over the past couple of years.

It's hard working with only the YZE SRD.

It would be nice if FLP published an actual book for their engine, like Chaosium does with the BRP.

Sadly, because R3DSHIF7 is a story- and character-drama-heavy game that uses D6 dice pools, the #Chaosium #BasicRoleplaying engine wouldn't really fit.

I've had my eye on this one for a while, so today when I visited the Scifi bookstore in #Stockholm, I could clearly hear it calling to me. It's not that I want to play it, but it's interesting from a #TTRPG design and historical perspective, especially since it's the root of Drakar och Demoner (Dragonbane) which was my introduction into the TTRPG world back in the 80's.

I think I have made a decision.... 😎

In my quest for the best rules (for me) to use when #GMing a #ttrpg in #TheExpanse universe. Got selection down to either #BasicRoleplaying #BRP or #YearZeroEngine #YZE.

And the choice is...

*Drumroll*

I will base it on #AlienRPG, since talents and skills are best match for Expanse and require least amount of tweaks to be useable.

I'm also fond of #lifepath character generation, so I have created a draft of a flowchart. Now I need to start to assign actual values to the chart and do some beta testing 😎

I wonder if I'll ever will be ready to play 🤣

As a DM I tend to let my players do plenty of dice-rolls, which in turn drives the story forward, where failures can be as exciting as successes.... 😎

But YZE punishes dice-rolling and rolling to often can give high amounts of stress to fast.
I can always do non-stress rolls when my players are in a non-stress situation. But on the other hand, BRP doesn't punish rolling. But still have mechanics for pushing failed rolls and the consequences of that 😁

3. First RPG bought (this year)
Went though my account and saw HumbleBundle January 1st and got excited, but it was just the bank date. Humble's purchase date was December 30th. It was the #Vaesen & #ForbiddenLands bundle.

A bit further I found an 11SEK purchase from Drivethough on the 10th. Apparently it was a sale going on the then as I got #BasicRoleplaying for 1US$. Kind of a steal. Have yet to actually download the PDF and read anything. Just an offer too good to pass by.

Legend and OpenQuest are fantasy games, not generic systems like #BasicRoleplaying. I don't think Mythras is free.

#BasicRoleplaying does most things by rolling under a percentage on #d100. It's simpler than it looks.

I'd love to play a #TTRPG system that combined the roll-under percentile dice mechanics of #BasicRoleplaying with the rich sourcebooks and #InfiniteWorlds backdrop of #GURPS. For solo #RPG adventures, I'd use #MatrixGames as an oracle:

@cybergoths @ttrpg @Chaosium I'm referring to the new free #BasicRoleplaying. The earlier edition only has some of those things.

@cybergoths @ttrpg @Chaosium My first game was AD&D as GM and player, followed by a bit of #Traveller (I'm not sure I ever got to play, as the chargen was exhausting). I briefly GMed a homebrew #BasicRoleplaying game called #Superheroes Against #Cthulhu (#CoC and #Superworld). I've also played #Fiasco, and probably some other stuff I can't recall. I don't have time to GM these days, but I keep hoping someone will run a #BRP or #GURPS game that will appeal.

Finally, I'd like to see free/open game systems for everyone's tastes, but #Fate/#Fudge just isn't crunchy enough for mine, so please pardon me for being exuberant that the #BasicRoleplaying system has finally been liberated! 😀

Because it's the first "Universal Game Engine" released under the free #ORC license, the new #BasicRoleplaying is poised to become the #Linux / open source software of the #TTRPG world. You can do almost whatever you like with the text of the book, including copy it, subject to the license.

I love #GURPS too, but it's not free & open the way #BRP is - yet.

Get BRP from #Chaosium or #DriveThruRPG, and pretty soon, all over the web.

The new edition of #BasicRoleplaying includes rules for vehicles (it says here). I wonder if we'll see spacecraft, like, I dunno, General Products hulls with the serial numbers painted over (you can't file them off, of course) -- or any other borrowings from #Ringworld after #Chaosium lost the license.

I'm not sure why folks are liking my last post, but it occurs to me that if I'm going to play solo, I don't have to be efficient; I can overkill my games as much as I see fit: #GURPS books, #BasicRoleplaying, #MatrixGames, bring it on
