i do want to give a special shout out to my neighbors, who went through a similar type of situation 18 years ago and have taken over the lawyer search after seeing the difficulty i was having, thinking it would be easy because they had the experience from 18 years ago - it’s interesting to see this go down in real time, my three neighbors, struck by the realization that shit no longer works the way it’s supposed to work.
it used to work. and as far as everyone knows, it still does. it’s supposed to.
but it doesn’t. what are the odds that every lawyer in the Missouri bootheel just isn’t interested, like “no thanks” and that’s that? what are the odds?
i don’t know how to do odds math (i am stoned)
it’s not random tho. they all have the right to choose whether to accept clients based on their interests. their interests are $$$$ and also justice and to help people but financial security first, then justice and helping people. these are times of uncertainty, you see.
and because they think highly of their colleagues in the area, i’d bet that a lot of them figure somebody else will surely help, there are plenty of lawyers, someone will definitely help this person…
so it’s supposed to work like this but it doesn’t, and it’s nobody’s fault really. it’s nobody’s responsibility but mine. and the only responsible option is to get assistance from a lawyer. but it’s not their responsibility. it’s mine. so i must hire a lawyer…
nothing changed but everything changed. there was never any big decision made or official proclamation or announcement of any kind. over time, conditions change. and in this late stage of capitalism (the neoliberal era) things have been changing faster.
not just the economy, social and political conditions too.
people’s attitudes are changing. people are letting themselves go, character wise. they’re rewarded for it because it keeps us endlessly exploitable. society is atomizing. this dog eat dog society of winners and losers is atomizing. more and more people take on the mindset of eat or be eaten. and despite all this change, the only people who seem to have noticed it are scammers and traffickers and other such predatory individuals.
they know a lot and it serves their interests perfectly that nice respectable people think shit’s still exactly the way it was in 2008.
