  1. Dame Edna Everage's letter to the Telegraph about that unfortunate Possum Barry Humphries sets the standard for obituaries.

  2. @le_friwi_56 I didn’t change the topic? You were talking about the reactions to #barryhumphries particularly after his opinions since 2016. You said “FFS when will this stop” and I was answering when it will stop.

If you’ve blocked me does that mean you knew what I was talking about?

  3. CW: Content warning: transphobia, Barry Humphries

Being funny does not give one a free pass to be a transphobe.

Barry Humphries could have educated himself and moved with the times, but even when he was given multiple opportunities to demonstrate thoughtfulness and growth he doubled-down.

There's an obituary in ArtsHub written by Richard Watts. I've quoted the opening paragraphs below. But I feel I cannot link to the article because the rest of it verges on hagiography.

Barry Humphries, the Australian satirist and comedian whose skewering of middle class values made him a global star, has died aged 89.

Best known for characters such as the waspish Dame Edna Everage, boozy vulgarian Sir Les Patterson and the melancholic pensioner Sandy Stone, Humphries’ reputation became tarnished in recent years, thanks in part to his increasing conservatism and his notorious description of gender reassignment surgery as ‘self-mutilation’.

He doubled down on his comments in a subsequent interview with The Spectator, calling ‘transgenderism’ a ‘fashion’ and saying: ‘And it’s pretty evil when it’s preached to children by crazy teachers.’

The controversy saw the Melbourne International Comedy Festival rename its Barry Award for best show as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award for Most Outstanding Show.

  4. CW: Barry Humphries' transphobia

"DAME Edna creator Barry Humphries has slammed transgenderism [sic], calling it 'rat-baggery', and attacked 'evil' teachers who 'preach' it to children. … IN A NEW interview with The Spectator [obviously—Ed]…he described the identity as a 'fashion—how many different kinds of lavatory can you have?” before adding, 'And it’s pretty evil when it’s preached to children by crazy teachers.'"

  5. CW: Barry Humphries' transphobia

"Asked about his friend's [Germaine Greer's] remarks [that trans women like Caitlin Jenner are men 'who believe that they are women and have themselves c******ed'], Humphries said: 'I agree with Germaine! You're a m******ed man, that's all. Self-m*******on, what's all this carry on? Caitlyn Jenner – what a publicity-seeking ratbag. It's all given the stamp – not of respectability, but authenticity or something.'"

  6. I didn’t realise until recently that #BarryHumphries provided the voice and motion capture performance for the Great Goblin in Peter Jackson’s #TheHobbit, including the songs. What a legend.

  7. @Maren_Kroymann When asked about whether or not his character of Sir Les Patterson — a boorish and sexist, pussy-grabbing politician — has any connection to Donald Trump, Humphries says, “I’m grateful to Trump for stirring up politics. And I won’t be joining any marches against him.” 🤮

  8. So clever. Brilliant. That sense of not knowing what was coming next, but knowing that whatever it was would somehow be a pisstake, withering social commentary & hilarious all at the same time. RIP #BarryHumphries #DameEdnaEverage #SirLesPatterson #SandyStone youtu.be/qv1b54NgbIw

  9. So sad to hear about the death of Barry Humphries. He was a leader in the generation of Australian comedians who made us laugh at all the "sacred" norms of society. He made us better as a people.

(Let those who have never sinned in 89 years cast the first stone.)

  10. Predictably the newspapers are sad about the death of the character Dame Edna rather than the man Barry that acted her. No mention of his deeper interests including magic and the compilation of banned writings I’ve kept on my shelf. If you are going to do an obit how about celebrating the whole person. #BarryHumphries #SoftCancelling

  11. #RIP #BarryHumphries (aka #DameEdna) (1934–2023)

Mostly a #TV celebrity, Humphries (at times billed as DAME EDNA EVERAGE) was seen in several #movies, going all the way back to #StanleyDonen's BEDAZZLED (1967), in which he plays one of the Seven Deadly Sins, Lust.

    Other notable #films include: NICHOLAS NICKLEBY (2002) and #AbsolutelyFabulous: The #Movie (2016).

He also provided the voice of #Bruce the #Shark in #Pixar's FINDING NEMO.
