GIICA are in the process of closing the fence for their "stage 2, today". That includes York's Hollow. First Nations camp is inside the main fenced area on the other side of the bike path.

They are currently excavating above the palm grove, along the driving range fence. There's another excavator further down along the fence, to the North East.

They were already putting the fences up today along Victoria Park Road. That wasn't much warning, was it. (4 days)

There you go. Just a couple of weeks after fencing most of the Herston side of #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark, GIICA just sent an email to annonce they will close off even more: everything south of the #QUT campus, and around York's Hollow too. We're just left with a small area around the pump track.
No date, just "in the next few weeks".
Justification? "To ensure the safety of the community, residents and workers." Whatever that means. 🤷🏽
And still no plans. -
Making some progress mapping precise tree positions at #Barrambin from surveys, although there are patches that I can't get close enough to anymore because of the fences. 500+ so far.
I've been told no tree has been felled yet, so I'm hopeful to have good coverage into #OSM soon as a baseline but will need to finally get my hands on the council's dataset (with waiver) and some other licence-compatible data sources if I'm to include out-of-sight trees. For more context: https://mastodon.indie.host/@stragu/116654697719476756

Was happy to find the full list of RSS feeds for #4ZZZ shows.
I now have Eco Radio in Podverse.
In the 27th of May episode, I was interviewed for the #Barrambin Bioblitz I organised (thankfully CJ did a way better job than me right after). -
This linktree conveniently lists a bunch of things you can do to continue fighting for #Barrambin, including signing petitions, contacting your representatives, and funding campaigns:
The fight continues despite the fences.
Cheers

There are still various camps going in #Barrambin at the moment, both inside and outside the fences, if you want to join them.
Most of the fencing was already up today but with various access points all around.

First observation of a Pale-Headed Rosella at #Barrambin, observed by prolific #iNaturalist contributor Sylvia:
https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/observations/366590896
That makes 39 species of birds recorded there:

Last day before fences completely close up. Protest against the stadium at 12 pm today, starting from Herston rd entrance.

Another way #OpenStreetMap contributors can help this weekend is by mapping on site the precise position of individual notable trees in the area planned to be fenced.
If the tree has a metal tag, add the number to the "ref" key so we can match them to databases like this one: https://www.savevictoriapark.com/trees(Please no armchair mapping from imagery, this needs current, up to date data.)

The article shows the potential for corruption this state government is facilitating:
"His government introduced legislation exempting all 17 Queensland Olympic venues from 15 state planning, environmental and heritage laws [...]. The announcement came in the same month that the government also lifted a ban that previously blocked property developers from making political donations."
This is the Crisafulli / Bleije gov for ya.

This is a good video for a bit of background on the flip-flopping, the ballooning of costs, and the insults hurled by the government at campaigners concerned about First Nations peoples' rights and the environmental damage.

Happy #olympicGames everyone. It's 2026 and we're still kicking First Nations people off their land. History repeating to build a stadium we don't need. For a two-week event in 2032.
Fuck the Olympic Games, fuck Queensland Police, fuck the Queensland Government, fuck BCC and fuck GIICA.

Even if you're not local, you can contribute by identifying observations to refine the data:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?project_id=288305
Eventually, observations that reach a consensus end up in other databases, like the Atlas of Living Australia.
This is a report from the ALA for the same area. It lists 21 "threatened species".

In 24 hours, we managed to upload 232 observations.
One week later, we've added 45 species to the list. There are now 348 taxa recorded at #Barrambin :
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/barrambin-victoria-park
But there's lots more to explore and record, so if you're a local, please have a wander and contribute your snaps to the database! Every #iNaturalist observation that falls in that area makes it into the list automatically.
A stadium doesn't belong here.

On the same website, you can still sign the petition against a stadium in the middle of our biggest inner-city park:
https://www.savevictoriapark.com/petition
and donate to the legal fund:
https://www.savevictoriapark.com/donate
Donating via Friends of the Earth makes your donation tax-deductible.
The same website has lots of resources to learn more about why constructing a stadium there is a terrible idea, but here's a shortlist of 10 reasons:

GIICA want to fence off most of #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark this Monday 1st of June - in less than 3 days!
This is 6 years before the games, without having released a construction plan for the public to review.
That would require kicking out the First Nations camps on this culturally and historically significant site – during National Reconciliation Week.
Our green lungs are being sold off.
See below what we can do.

It's International Day for Biological Diversity!
This year's theme is "Acting locally for global impact", so there's no better time to visit your local wild and green spaces, have a reset, and record their residents with #iNaturalist:

If you're local to #Meanjin / #Magandjin (#Brisbane), join tomorrow's #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark Bioblitz (9 am), to protect our remaining inner-city pockets of nature against development:

I'm running an #iNaturalist Bioblitz at #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark this Saturday, 9 am.
Let's record as many species as possible before GIICA fences off most of the park.

Last week's event at #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark
https://www.greenleft.org.au/2026/1454/news/standing-barrambin-against-olympics-destruction
GIICA wants to fence off most of the park in 12 days (1st of June), kicking out the First Nations camp in the process.
You can still sign the community submission, until the 29th of May:
-
Earlier today, at ‘Caring for Barrambin’ Day.
This is what they're planning to bulldoze, level and concrete over.
If you haven't done so, please fill in a submission for the Section 10 application under the ATSIHP act (only takes a few seconds) to get the First Nations cultural significance of this site recognised:
-
People of #Meanjin / #Magandjin / #Brisbane, it would be great if you could make it tomorrow:
‘Caring for Barrambin’ Day
Saturday, 16th May, 10am onwards
#Barrambin / #VictoriaParkGIICA plans to fence off most of our biggest inner-city park in about two weeks. Come and show your solidarity with First Nations people fighting to not have their sacred, living country covered in concrete. ✊

Today, and every Friday before June, you can meet other activists at the park, and share some food:

I asked GIICA for plans for the stadium and watersport venues at #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark and this is what they replied:
"While we are unable to provide a detailed map or plans of all buildings and amenities at this time, we have attached an overhead view of the precinct that shows access changes and fence lines from 1 June 2026."
So... they are fencing off most of the park on 1st of June, but can't show us plans of what will be built?
This is the map of what they plan to fence off in June.
