  1. 🎉 Happy #DigitalIndependeneDay everyone!

    🤔 Isn't it time for a »Declaration of Digital Independence«?

Wait a minute, there is already #Barlow's 📃 »Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace«. And it was published on 8 February 1996. Exact 30 Years ago!🎂 @eff

  6. "In 2015, #Graber met with #Barlow, and boldly asked him if he had been naive, with his declaration. If he had not seen if the internet could be used to surveil and control. Barlow's answer is that he knew this was a possibility, but that his job was to inspire, to get people to believe in the positive vision that the internet could be. This is the same position that Graber takes for herself in this speech, inspiring other developers to build a better future, a world without Caesars.

But the argument that Graber brings to the table left me unsatisfied. The positive vision of the mid 1990s did not come to pass, even though the belief that the internet would change everything for the better was widespread. So what makes this time different?"

  7. "#GilbertoGil, as the Minister of Culture in Brazil…surrounded by 2 panelists:
#Barlow saw the internet as a place which should not be bothered by governments & regulations.
#Barbrook had the view that the internet had been created with public funding, and there should be equality & inclusion in its implementation.
Gil answered to that tension saying that such difference should be resolved dynamically. He used the image of #capoeira moves—a mix of play and fight, of #dance and confrontation."

We were surprised with the numbers. We will see if the candidates are really prepared for the task. But the idea was to make a big shout into the void (the Brazilizan fediverse), and see what would come. They came..

John #Barlow once told us that '#Brazil is a networked society already. Give them some infrastructure and... SHAZAMM!!'

  11. Several things changed—pretty sure for the better!
    1. Because the jeweller’s local, a servant sees her there & gossips that she’s *buying* jewellery. Since Mrs F’s meant to be down to her last penny, other characters give her a hard time, ramping up the conflict she’s experiencing.
    2. Mrs F distracts a lecturing relative by talking about JH #Barlow’s tea-urn. The tea trade’s a plot strand in the book, so that’s contextually appropriate.

    And…

  12. #FoodHeaven… spiced scotch egg 😘. I discovered this delicious new dish tonight at the Tickled Trout pub in #Barlow. Perfectly soft yolk in soft, fishy potato with a crisp breadcrumb coating and a creamy, sweet, spicy sauce…. Perfection (as usual). It’s about time the AA discovered this place and gave it the rosettes it so richly deserves. Consistently good food thanks to chef patron Chris Mapp.
