@mcmullin I'm gonna have to think hard about everything you said here 😆, BUT I was listening to a #BarbershopQuartet tune not 5 minutes ago and, at the very last note, it seemed to me like the singers were playing with tuning in *some* way to create an effect in the people, who immediately started clapping furiously.
It reminded me of that Jacob Collier song "Hideaway", where he moves the tuning gradually from 432 Hz to 440 for this effect of "going outside"—cool stuff to experiment with.

Since it can be so (intentionally, often jokingly) hokey and old-fashioned, I bet you wouldn’t have guessed that there’s anything in common between #BarbershopQuartet, #microtonal music, #JustIntonation and Tuvan #ThroatSinging? But there is! It’s the way they “ring” the abundant dominant-7th chords by lowering the 7th a 1/6-tone or so to the natural 7th-partial harmonic, and roughen the vocal timbre slightly to bring out and reinforce the bell-like upper overtones.
