@hkfp Under despotism all decent people who dare to voice opinions are persecuted.

@thejapantimes LOL. After CK sold the *strategic* port in Panama to muricans the CCP sent them a memo they wouldn't dare ignore: Consider the strategic interests of the Chinese dictatorship OR ELSE...

@heidilifeldman PS. #Hongkong acts as the Chinese regime's #bankingcolony, now busy building CCP's ties to the global network of anti-democracy autocrats.
Without effective and clear-eyed sanctions and embargoes crime will continue to pay handsomely. And not just the USA but all democracies will face well-funded enemies intent on disruption, division and worse.
The time for pulling the plug on hostile 'economies' was over thirty years ago. Yet here we are still feeding the beast because "cheap eggs" essentially...

@w7voa Just a day earlier the CCP-installed Hong Kong administration came up with new laws protecting the Party-state from disobedience: Businesses can be held liable to draconian punishments for any missteps (even perceived hostility towards the dictatorship) *by their employees or even contractors*.
Think about it.
Of course the CCP knows from experience that democracies aren't willing to stand up against them and disrupt all the business over mere run-of-the-mill despotism.
They had countless reasons to stop collaborating over the decades already and never did. π€·ββοΈ

@georgetakei Reminds me of Hong Kong during the 2019 anti-dictatorship protests. The regime banned wearing masks, but, as diktated by the CCP in Beijing, in early 2020 wearing masks was ruled compulsory.
That in itself isn't insane (see: "Wuhan virus aka Covid19), but the "law" making mask-wearing illegal remained in the books and was even enforced!
In the end Hongkongers lost their fight for the promised democratic rights and civil liberties.
You don't want that happening to your country. You really don't.
-
@w7voa Fun fact: Most likely inspired by this, the Chinese Communist Party has come up with a concept called "soft resistance" in Hong Kong.
That means any demonstration or expression of civil liberty the regime can conceive as a slight to their dictatorship.

@arstechnica He was admittely appreciated in his native Hong Kong until he turned into a firebrand communist party stooge.
Now it's quite the opposite. He's loathed.
(Not sure about the timing, but his son was caught in the PRC in possession of cannabis which might have something to do with his radicalization, but now he's a full jingoist little pink.)

This recap covers only the tiniest fraction of what went on in 2019 and what followed. CCP now has total control of all levers of power and influence in its #BankingColony without civil liberties. Its propaganda blaming "foreign forces" for "black-clad violence" was broadcast on all global authoritarian media. Many Hongkongers, especially youth and families with kids, have emigrated or fled the territory.
AFAICT only a small minority of Hong Kong's expats participated in the protests, but many more have since left due to the repressive atmosphere. Some sosiopathic sycophants have apparently moved there though in search of profit along with russians (probably shipping tech back to militant russia and helping skirt international financial embargoes...).
One final #trump anecdote: In 2020 when the CCP-imposed "state security law" (NSL) was coming into effect (in typical CCP style, the 'law' is *retroactive*, meaning any perceived *past* infringement can and will be prosecuted!), one of the globally famous pro-democracy faces, young Joshua Wong, tried applying for political asylum at a US mission in Hong Kong but he was denied entry by the trump 1.0 admin...
For his devotedly (he's s practising catholic) peaceful advocacy of promised democratic rights he's been incarcerated until 2029 at least. In a gaol without air-conditioning or heating more akin to a Chinese laogai. Just like all the other peaceful advocates of democracy.
βPresident Trump said, βWhy donβt we just open up? Why donβt we just let a huge portion of people from Hong Kong move to the U.S.?β And I loved it,β Pottinger told us. βYou know, my view was just, transplant the whole damn city and make a new Hong Kong in America. [Trump] was like, βTheyβre going to be industrious; theyβll be great. Theyβll make great Americans.ββ
But Stephen Miller, Trumpβs far-right political adviser, stopped the immigration scheme from going further. He was βvery persuasive,β

@thejapantimes More manipulation of international trade and finance through an artificial 'SEZ'?
#WTO and 'free trade' are truly wondrous things; esp. for all autocrats and oligarchs.

@w7voa I wonder how it's going for the #hangseng index in #CCP-controlled #bankingcolony of #Hongkong...
It's awesome that the Party can play without restrictions in the *capital* markets of its choice.
"Win-win" as always.

@ilvestoomas Most global acts like #TaylorSwift have the intelligence and/or conscience to steer clear of providing circus services to the #Hongkong regime that is desperate to *normalize* the #CCP party-state's #bankingcolony after the 2019 crushing of Hongkongers democratic and civil rights aspirations promised to them in the handover treaty with the UK.
#ChrisMartin may be a 'lovely man' but understanding 'influence ops' is probably just greek to him.
Who knows, perhaps the dire circumstances will be mentioned in the context of his Hong Kong gig and a few people end up wiser for it?

@thejapantimes Fascinating.
β Commentator from the PRC
β US labelled "hawkish"
β requires 'macromanaging' for the greater cause of the "New Era...#Hongkong as CCP's banking colony (fsck the people, right?) is clearly struggling to fulfill the banking service duties the CCP has for decades depended upon.
The 2019 crushing of Hongkongers hopes for reasonable level of autonomy and civil rights *promised* to them by the treaty between the UK and CCP before the 1997 handover just might have something to do with the colony's relapse into obscurity.
Are the anti-democracy allies not bringing in enough cash for CCP's global projects? π«€
Are the still any rational reasons to recognise Hong Kong as a separate entity from the PRC empire, other than because it benefits the ruling regime?

Unfortunately this short piece gives the impression that there is at least *some* kind of political process still taking place in CCP's #bankingcolony, #Hongkong.
"The lack of participation from pro-democracy parties reflects the dwindling space for the movement in the city [...]"
'Dwindling'? After pro-democracy candidates won majority of the vote *in every single district* in the last partially free District Council elections in 2019, there is now *zero space* for anyone advocating for democratic rights. Zero.
Democracy is #1 "national security" threat to the never-elected #dictatorship.
Now the "election candidates" are *all* pro-CCP; either members of CCP front groups or certified loyal sycophants from tightly aligned interest groups. Almost entirely the former.
Fun tidbit: Out of the 171 'candidates' running for 88 'closed-circuit' seats, 121 were members of three committees responsible for deciding who could participate... (Courtesy of DeΓ€thmΓΌffin)
It's a #CCP gravy train with blindly loyal passengers fighting over who gets just the regular gravy and who also gets all the extra helpings and countless other murky perks.

@josephcox Who here thinks they'll next target the casinos in the #PRC's second #bankingcolony of #Macau used for laundering #Chinese assets? Any bets? π§
Didn't think so either...
Not that I'd personally care about the welfare of casino operators much anywhere.

This bears (poohs?) repeating: #Hongkonger was charged with #sedition and *incarcerated* pending 'trial' (100% conviction rate?) for... importing *children's books* that the π¨π³ #CCP fears. Β―\_(γ)_/Β―

Imagine if the actual nazis were still genociding the native peoples and cultures in occupied lebensraum *for 70 fucking years and counting*...
Imagine the 'third reich' β completely unrepentent and still military-expansionist β was not only admitted to the United Nations but given a top seat with veto powers...
Just so that the industrialists and bankers of the democratic world could do unhindered business there, with cheap labour (the reeducation camps naturally fully utilized!) and not a labour law or civil libetry in sight!
Imagination isn't needed.
The CCP chinazis, who even adopted "legalism" from nazi #Germany to justify any and all acts of despotism under "rule-by-law", their dictatorship switched from nominal "communism" to #NationalSocialism (orig. nazional sozialismus i.e. nazism) and did all that. While killing more people than #stalin and #hitler *combined*. After WWII, 'the end of all wars'...
And *still* people of the embattled democracies are buying all they can from that regime, empowering it and paying its bills as is builds it concentration camps and its military power and its internal control machinery... Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
Ukrainians are now having to fight to stop #russian genocidal invasion exactly because the likes of #putin and #xijinping saw there were no *consequences* if you genocide #Tibetans or #Uighurs or even deprive #Hongkongers of their civil rights in that #BankingColony of the #CCP ...
Well, all that #indifference that has caused so much suffering to those neighbours of despotic imperialists will inevitably hit home at those indifferent democracies that chose to look away.
And it always was a choice.

Someone please remind me again why, after trashing the #JointDeclaration with #UnitedKingdom which supposedly "guaranteed" civil freedoms and #humanrights for #Hongkongers, the #Chinese #dictatorship is still allowed to use the territory as a trojan horse to manipulate global trade and finance?
Btw. it was 'interesting' how during the #wuhan Covid pandemic lockdowns when regular citizens-turned-subjects lived under draconian restrictions and quarantine orders, visiting foreign financiers and industrialists (i.e. collaborators) were awarded a free pass...
Quite the 'proletarian revolution' you got there! That really showed the 'capitalist running dogs', right?
Because the CCP princelings and clans would never turn into a supercluster of robber barons. Like, never-ever.

Chinese (#HongKong) regime's case against #BaoChoy is beyond ridiculous: She was *convicted* of... wait for it... looking up publically available vehicle registration data.
Her real "crime" was successfully identifying many of the organized crime thugs (called triads, Chinese mafia groups) that brutally attacked defenceless commuters and returning pro-democracy protesters at a busy train station, because... wait for it... those thugs were very close associates of prominent CCP backers.
Those thugs had been hired to send a bloody message to #Hongkongers: Submit to #CCP repression or we will hurt you. At random.
The ever-increasing regime violence did start thinning out the mass protests, but thanks to many live video feeds and the work of journalists like Bao Choy the people already *knew*, for a fact, who had orchestrated the shocking assault.
Prosecuting the investigative journalists or anyone standing up for the now-buried notion of a civil society or #UN #humanrights is now merely tedious #legalistic cleanup work and anyone involved in the persecutions should be sanctioned off civilized world for good.
The real "pearl of the orient" realization here is that the CCP #dictatorship apparently gets to crush #Hongkong society without #consequences while keeping its manipulative global #BankingColony operations there fully intact.
Democracies are still playing the game to CCP's tune. How's it going so far?

The thousands of #Hongkongers CCP is jailing in #Hongkong for trumped up reasons (read: merely resisting violent never-elected dictatorship) are some of the finest human beings any half-decent country would be proud of.
Besides continuing to trade with and fund that #dictatorship, how long are decent countries continuing to maintain the *special* business status for that #CCP's repressive #BankingColony?
-
Great piece on the relentless #orwellian dismantling of Hong Kong's civil society by Louisa Lim.
For generations people fled the Chinese mainland to Hong Kong to find a safe harbour.
Now it's #Hongkongers fleeing; it's either that or submitting to wholesale reprogramming while serving the never-elected regime.
Remind me again, why does Hong Kong still enjoy special trade and other statuses internationally if its only function now is to serve CCP's global business ambitions and objectives?
Like any other treaty it has ever signed (while "biding time"), the CCP has now scrapped even the memory of the Joint Declaration. Well why not, if it gets to keep all the goodies that it can benefit from without facing any consequences.
